From Sally — Is Red the New Black Green?

Filed under: Cobblestone Pullover for Sterling — surly @ 1:07 pm

My son arrived on our doorstep (well, really at the airport but you know what I mean) on Friday.  He was — and this was not a surprise — wearing it.  The green sweater I made him for Christmas.  The one he wears virtually non-stop.  Be still my heart.

I gifted him with his new red sweater, and I can only hope he wears it half as much.  I didn’t see much of him — he was here for a conference, not a family visit, and I was out of town one of the nights he was home.  But just before he headed back to the airport, I was allowed to take a few quick shots of him in his new finery.  They’re not the best shots, and he asked me to obscure his face. But voila:

  5. Beautiful sweater. I love it in red, too! Since your son seems to love this sweater maybe you could knit him one more in blue?

(From what little I can see, he looks like a cutie!!)

  6. isn’t it wonderful when everything comes together? the yarn, the color, the pattern, the wearer?
the whole being greater than the sum of the parts.

  10. Your son looks great in that colour. Doesn’t it make it all so worth while when someone actually loves wearing the garments that you have knitted for them? Bx

  13. It’s a great sweater. I bet he now gives the green one a rest (though he’ll go back to it, too, I’m sure).

  17. Best lookin’ Cobblestone I ever did see and I was lucky enough to see the original — but it wasn’t RED!

  18. I made this sweater for my son as well and really enjoyed knitting this pattern. He wore it a lot the first year but haven’t seen it this winter. I wonder if he accidentally washed and felted it? Perhaps I should ask. Maybe it is salvageable and it will fit me now.

  19. 2/4/11 8am ….yes, the sweater is beautiful…..is the pattern available anywhere??…. now the best part of your post is showing how “bendable” young men of his age are….bendable leaves them as they age into their 30’s….but right now the sweater is shown off to its finest by being casual and slouchy–much more realistic than a stiff model on a Rowan catalogue page….thanks for sharing…

  20. THis is beautiful. Can you tell me the name of the yarn, colour, and how many skeins you used?

  21. I love this sweater. Sometimes less really is more. I’ve been thinking about making this pattern for myself (a post-menapause female) because it looks like such a warm and comfy “old friend” for weekend wear. I’ve seen dozens of pictures of the sweater, but after seeing yours I’m now on fire to get the pattern and cast on.

  22. Oh my, what a beautiful job you did and how wonderful that your son actually wears something you made! (The Husband and The Girl are on-side with wearing my handknits, but I may be waiting a long time for The Boy to give up his plaid shirts and fleece hoodies.) The yarn is gorgeous and it fits him perfectly. Well done indeed!
