From Susan — Down but Not Out!

My surgery went fine — they did not need to graft additional tendon and so it was a simpler procedure.  The nerve block kept me pain free all day yesterday, but I think it is starting to wear off…

I love our readers!  Your kind and HELPFUL comments meant a lot to me.  Hubby is waiting on me literally hand and foot, but he will need to go to work at some point!  One of his co-workers had surgery on the same day I did, so he could not take off a lot of time.  I am using a knee scooter instead of crutches (though I do have a pair) and already took a tumble off one of the crazy steps in our house — almost every room is “sunken!”   Not a great set up for the old or infirmed!

I am able to knit and I am LOVING my Taygete.  Madeline Tosh Light should be considered a controlled subsance!  I have a stack of projects to work on so I should be set to go.  Thanks for your kind thoughts and well wishes!

PS — Ronna asked for a picture of my knee scooter:

Drive Medical 790 Steerable Knee Walker

I need to add a basket or something for hauling my stuff…you know me, I do not travel light!

  1. If Madeline Tosh Light is a controlled substance, than I apparently need an intervention!

  2. Glad to hear things are going well. I thought of you throughout the day yesterday.

Those knee scooters are a miracle. Crutches take a huge amount of energy and are not good for your armpits!

  3. So very glad your procedure went well. What is a knee scooter? Could you take a picture? It’s too bad you have to sit and knit to get better………..

  4. I have been holding my breath. Thanks for letting me exhale. So glad everything went well, and that there is such a thing as a knee scooter. Too bad you have to knit through your convalescence. At least the Madeline Tosh Light is helping to take the edge off.

  5. Thank you so much for updating all of us. I think we are all happy to know that everything went well and especially happy to know it was a bit simpler than expected. Best wishes for a speedy recovery and happy knitting to you. Keep us posted on both.

  6. I thought about you yesterday after reading the post that said you were going to have surgery. I’m glad it went well. I hope you really don’t have to have your foot above your heart 23 hours/day for two weeks. That sounds a little undo-able to me.

Be very careful with a basket on the scooter. Depending on how much weight the back half of the scooter is any weight in a basket hanging off the front handlebars could make the scooter tip forwards the second you let go of it – faster than you can say ‘spilled coffee’. My mom got a basket for her walker and had the tipping problem. But like I said, it depends on if there is very much weight in the back to counter balance what is in the basket.

    Get well soon!

  8. Glad your surgery went well. I used a knee scooter when I had foot surgery last year and it “saved” me. Made getting around for that month much-much easier. I used one of my tote bags in the front and would put lunch, etc in there in closed containers and zip around the house from kitchen to den. Just watch out for things like kitties sleeping in the hall!

  9. I will not wish you get well soon because the recovery period sounds ominous and long. I will, instead wish you a perfect recovery, textbook, and that the recovery period will feel like it is flying by.

  10. Hurrah! And I believe that MadelineTosh is easier on the digestive system than most controlled substances used to control pain, so you indulge all you want.

  11. So very glad your surgery went well. I agree with the others about the scooter. BIL used it and said it was so much better than using crutches. Heal that heel.

  12. So glad to hear things went better than expected! And I love the knee scooter! One of my son’s college buddies had foot surgery last fall and used a knee scooter to get around on campus. By the end of the year, he was completely healed — but still using the knee scooter because it was so convenient! (And all the kids on campus wondered where THEY could get on. . .)

  14. Glad to hear that the easy part went well. Now comes the hard part. Besides everything else that has been said be sure to drink a lot of fluids. Constipation is problem when you take pain meds and when you don’t move around enough so don’t let that happen. Luckily fresh fruit and veggies are in season.

  15. Glad everything went well. One of my fellow admins had some sort of foot surgery and she had a knee scooter. My wacky group fell IN LOVE with it and spent long hours plotting how they could get it away from her and have races down some of our long aisles at work.

  16. I think you could really add neat-o-keeno touches to the scooter — how about streamers or yarn bombs? Hope you recovery goes well!

  18. Come to your blog via a link on Twitter! Wow – loving the knee scooter – how cool! I broke my leg just over a week ago. I could do with a scooter – I’m lethal on crutches! Wishing you a speedy recovery.
