From Susan — Brick by Brick

Yes, like building a house brick by brick, you build a sweater stitch by stitch.  And, like a house, you need to keep your crew on task!  I am building a Brownstone for my husband.

Brownstone by Jared Flood

This classic style looks very much like a sweater my DH had when we were first dating — he wore it ALL the time, so I am hoping he will approve.  It will be , might be, should be a Christmas present if I build it in time!

I decided to go ahead and actually use the yarn in the pattern: Jared’s Shelter in color Nest:

I started this last summer during Knitters Camp as my mindless, knit-in-the-round stockinette knitting.  What you see here is the body kind of folded in half to fit on my scanner.  Jared started this with the sleeves, but being the rebel that I am, I started with the body (You mean the way most sweaters start?  Yeah.  You’re a rebel all right.).  The yarn has a nubby thing going on, but you still get a very nice fabric.  I love the yarn and knitting with it.

Plan B:  If I can’t get it done in time for Christmas, John’s birthday is in February!

PS:  Kmkat asked, “Apparently your husband doesn’t read the blog? Or notice what you are knitting?”  In a word, no.  Semi-oblivious!

  1. Looks lovely and I do hope your husband loves it and WEARS it — and hey, the birthday is just as good as Christmas, but you look like you are about half way there so how long could it take to finish it up?

  2. Its a classic ‘guy’ sweater. It’s so classic that its the pattern my son chose once he decided he wanted a sweater for Christmas. I’m doing it in Remix in a grey/brown/olive colour.

  3. I start with the sleeves as a gauge swatch. I’d rather rip out a couple inches of sleeve than body. 😀

  5. Love that sweater. I’ve had my eye on it for my own husband! (That’s a nice Christmas-to-Birthday fall-back ratio you’ve got there! My own husband’s birthday is 5 days before Christmas! I’m always up against an impossible deadline. . .)

  6. It will be very handsome! And in such a manly color!

I too start with the sleeves whenever possible nowadays. First off, they are so boring and are quickly over with, but more importantly, as Suzan says, they are a nice gauge swatch. This is particularly true when knitting a very lumpy Aran. It so hard to tell, sometimes, how big a convoluted cable may turn out to be.

  7. Seems like we all recognize a great husband pattern when we see one — I bought the same pattern while at Sock Summit. And I love the look of the shelter…I may have to totally copy you!

  10. I guess there is a reason why it’s such a classic guy sweater – it’s really very handsome. That Shelter color is beautiful!
    Lucky husband!!

  11. Have been eying that sweater for the DH as well. It resembles one I bought (gasp-sorry) him the first year we were dating. He has worn it to shreds. Also has a Feb birthday. Hmmm….

I knit a sweater all last Thanksgiving weekend for a friend I was staying with. I just told her it was for my sister. Luckily, she loved the color!
