I love escargot and love the new pattern by the same name: Escargot by Veronica Parsons, Winter Knitty.

I have been trying to knit my oldest daughter a “suitable” hat for weeks now. She is very fussy. The last “order” placed was for something felted to keep her head warm. Since Escargot seemed perfect for her, I wondered how felting would work.

Escargot

I still could not get it small enough to fit her perfect, but tiny, head. I hope she sees that as a plus for avoiding “hat hair.”

I used Rowan Felted Tweed Aran in tweedy light and charcoal grays. The yarn was way too big. I would love to reknit this in a more suitable yarn for myself.

The picture above was taken fresh out of the wash — I have not sewn down the “swirl.” I highly recommend this pattern: way cute and very fun to knit.

PS: Wendy stated that using Rowan Felted Tweed to felt was a surprise because it is washable and therefore shouldn’t really felt. I looked at the label and thought the same thing. Then I was told at the shop that their sign did not say it was washable. And it did actually fully felted for me. It was just that I was trying to felt something 24 inches down to 20. That is a lot to expect.

PPS — daughter stopped by and saw the hat. She tried it on and does not like it. She does like the Grey Rikke so I guess that is the hat she will have. No more knitting for her – well, at least for a while. 🙁

  1. That’s a great hat, and just the thing for a fashion fussbudget!
One of my major vegetarian sorrows – maybe THE major sorrow – is escargot. Yummers!

  2. Oh my goodness, this is just way too cute. I’m going to have to give this a try. Wish me luck ‘cuz I’m pretty new to knitting AND I’ve never felted anything before. Whoo! Hoo!

  4. Adorable, but so surprised it felted. Ironically, Felted Tweed, according to the label, is supposed to be washable. Maybe that is why it did not felt as much as expected.

  5. LOVE this hat – it’s perfect for my daughter, also! Thanks so much for sharing!

  6. This is awesome.

I felted Rowan felted tweed – when I had washing machine malfunction. As it happened the cardigan was far to big for me and it came out a reasonable snug fit. I love the felted version!

  7. I have seen that pattern but it didn’t quite click for me in the sample-knit contrasting colors. LOVE it in your greys!!

  8. I love how your Escargot turned out! I was originally considering it as a felted hat but didn’t want to go through calculating for the shrinkage….

  9. Ah! story of my life. Now I wait for her to ‘order’ something. The hat is great, by the way.

  10. Wow. LOVE IT. I had to print out the pattern immediately as I know two young women that this would be perfect for! Hope I have/find/make time to knit it before the holidays, but if not, a happy surprise in January! I think your felted version is fantastic.

  11. I have a Particular daughter as well. I feel your pain. (Lovely hat!)

  12. Well, I love it!! And I know the problem. My son is the fussiest recipient of sweaters – there’s always some reason why he can’t wear it, even though it has been made to his exacting requirements. The joys!

  13. I saw this hat in Knitty and was not impressed, but I love your version. I’m going to knit one and see if one of my 2 girls likes it.

And, I sympathize with you about fussy children (and others). The worst is when you’ve knit something to their exact specs, and they still don’t like it! Now, I knit things for me that I allow to be ‘stolen’.
