From Susan — Lost Weekend

Oh my! To get sick the weekend before Christmas is ridiculous! Friday I was hit by a freight train that left me flat for two days. And really set me back during a year that already had me weeks behind! No decorating had occurred. Not. one. thing. So today I feel a little better and launched into it. First on the agenda, I put up my favorite thing about Christmas…my Santa Mantel:

Santa Mantel 001

Today also happens to be our wedding anniversary. One week before Christmas was a lovely day for a wedding– the world was decorated and celebrating! The years since have proven it to be a folly choice: swamped, exhausted, sick of running around and shopping. Not conducive to going out to celebrate. Plus, this year I am still not 100%. So, we may stay home with a movie and nice takeout meal from a restaurant. After 29 years, do you need more than that? Hey, we’re still married and happy so it’s working!!

  1. The Santa mantel – what a hoot. The shrine of St. Nick!

  2. Funny how much of that applies to me right now – dealing with a full-blown case of bronchitis, and hubby & I’s 24th anniversary is tomorrow. In previous years, we always spent it Christmas shopping after a nice dinner. I think takeout and a movie will be all that we manage this year. But hey, that’s all we really need!

  3. Happy Anniversary! Sitting around the fireplace to celebrate would be so charming. Enjoy!

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

  8. Congratulations, Susan and John! 29 years is quite an achievement these days! My husband and I are about to celebrate 44 years! I know exactly what you are saying about this time of year with all the decorations and ambience being so nice for a wedding. It’s been the same for us ever since with a dinner out or take out and then shopping to do – fighting fatigue and feeling swamped and rushed! As you know, this year we are downsizing for a move in Jan. so have added that to the “to do” list. We are planning to see “The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo” for sure! Feel better and eventually we will all be back to Penelope Knitter’s to relax! God bless you and family!

  9. Happy Anniversary – and love your mantel!

Isn’t it funny how we don’t choose our wedding day for the timing of anniversary celebrations? — like a lot of life, it happens for other reasons. I feel the same way about the birthday of one of my children which falls during all the end of school/graduation hullabaloo — but wouldn’t trade her for the world either. One of the nice things about being married and grownup is you can enjoy the quiet celebrations too, or postpone a bigger whirl for a quieter time.

  10. So sorry you’ve been under the weather – I do hope you are feeling better. It’s hard to be sick anytime, but during the holidays is especially difficult.

Congratulations on 29 years! That is just wonderful!

  11. Our 45th Anniversary is December 23rd this year. My sentiments exactly on the choice of dates. It sounded good at the time – but now? Not so much. Anyway, happy Anniversary to you.

  12. So sorry to hear about your flu……right on the heels of our fun evening at Panera. I hope you can celebrate that you’ve been married 29 years…….in spite of no fol-da-rol. You need to pick a date in the winter that you can use as your “anniversary” celebration day. It might be less frazzled for you. Tom and I are headed into #44 in June, but summer usually gets in the way of it that day, too. We are just all too busy! Hope you feel better as you head into the home-stretch of the week. It is okay to just do “less” this year.

  13. Our 29th was in October, and we stayed home this year too. We were both exhausted and tired of being on the run. We had a loely carry-out at home and it was perfect for this year. Congratulations on 29 years!

  14. OMG @ your stockings! My aunt knits those for family & friends. My parents cursed her for making such big ones! The one for my sister has the “L” backwards but that the only reverse in the over 100 stockings she’s made. Hope you are feeling better!

  15. Our Anniversary is the 26th – totally understand the folly part.

Happy Anniversary though; good to hear you’re up and feeling better.

  16. Our anniversary is the 19th–right there with you. And I was sick for the last two days. Yuck. Hope it gets better fast, and that you can enjoy the time you have.

    Merry Christmas!!
