From Susan — Your Lucky Day

Or maybe I should say, it is some family member’s lucky day!  You know exactly what to ask for this year for Christmas (or Hannukah, or a birthday).

Let’s face it.  Knitters are hard to shop for.  We love to spend money on knitting, but others cannot do it for us!  They don’t know what yarn we like, what knitting needles we need, or what books we already have.  Plus, we are E X P E N S I V E to shop for in the knitting arena.

This high end, coffee-table labor of love is the perfect gift because it is:

  1. specific — they can’t blow it!
  2. priced right (~$25)
  3. knitting related
  4. you need it even if you already own it!!

The book is Tudor Roses by Alice and Jade SStarmore.  If you have read our blog for any length of time you know we are both huge SStarmore fans, and have knit an array of their designs.

There are several new designs, but also several omissions: specifically the pièce de résistance, Henry – VIII.  There are no men’s patterns included in the new version.  Oh, well.  Nothing is perfect.

But this comes pretty darn close!

PS – I could not find the reference made as to why they left out the Henrys, but it appears to be because their focus was on the Tudor women.  I think the women were like planets revolving around the Henry-VIII sun, and therefore the king should have been included!  Important in their own right, but primarily remembered in history because of their relationship to him.  And, the sweater is stunning!!

  1. No men’s patterns. That’s interesting. I wonder what the reasoning was for that since the original had at least two that I can think of off the top of my head.

  2. This is going to the top of my Christmas List!
Along with the Rhinebeck Sweater book.

  3. Can’t wait to get my copy. And, I had so much fun on Friday. Yes, we will have to shuffle off to Buffalo again. Wish I’d paid more attention to some of those previously unheard of Scandinavian yarn names.

  4. Apparently the new version of the book is not yet on Ravelry, and the cover garment is new. What is the name of the sweater on the cover? (I’m hoping it will get put up on Ravelry soon or maybe there is another link to the new book? Tudor Roses II did not work.)

  5. Any other books you might want……I have many of them and am not ever going to be using them. I think it’s time to unload…..will be back in NY in April to my knitting Library,…

  6. Amazon.com has a link to the book introduction which explains why the SStarmores excluded the men, specifically the Henrys, and concentrated on the Tudor ladies. A shame since both Henry VIII and Henry VII are chefs d’oeuvres of design.

  7. Tudor Roses has been on my gift list ever since I hear they were reprinting it. Now if somebody could tell my family that so it didn’t feel like I was just telling my family what to get me.

  8. How can they have the Tudor Roses book without Henry VIII and Henry VII? Ridiculous, I say. I am excited about the classic patterns redone in yarns that are still available, though.

  9. … and I looked at the book, and I love the new designs. Must buy!

  10. I pre-ordered the book from Amazon and it arrived a month early and $4 less due to a price drop. It is a large, lovely book. Yes, it is missing some patterns from the original and I would love to read a full comparison, but I still find it knit-worthy.

  11. My copy arrived two days ago (thanks, Amazon!) and is a beauty in every way. The women’s designs, both new and revisited, in the new book are even more glorious than the originals, imo, and the lack of men’s patterns doesn’t bother me since I also own the original edition. (Yes, both editions of Tudor Roses and Aran Knitting are on my shelves. At least they were all bought new and not at exorbitant OOP prices).

  12. Yes I can feel the EXCITEMENT too. Nice suggestion for a book escape and knitting treasures to make! Thank you for all your insite through out the past year and Holiday Goodness for you and your family this big week ahead.
