From Susan — Knit Out 2008

Hi, everyone!  It has been a while, but we are still here.  My work life is hell, my home life busy, my knitting languishing, BUT I did get to Knit Out last Sunday at Brookdale Mall.  Ahh, what can I say about Brookdale?  It appears to be on its last legs!  Stores have closed, food vendors have disappeared, but lots of knitters showed up and we had a ball.

Here you see Shelley, Michele and Paula, waiting to answer questions at the Knitting Experts table — and there were some!  Several people brought their troublesome knitting projects along and sought advice.  Our three experts could handle anything!

A lot of people hung around, knitting and chatting.

That’s what my knitting trio did: Mary, Emily and I sat and knitted and showed people what knitting is all about.  We each brought projects to show off the diversity that is knitting: lace, fair isle, beadwork, cables.  A lot of people stopped by our table to gawk and talk.  There were many familiar faces and some new friends, too.

Guild volunteers were also set up to teach people to knit.  The display was very cute (sorry, no picture) with stacks of lovely colored yarn, each skein with a set of needles.  They were given to new knitters for free with their lesson so they could continue at home.  This little knitter-to-be was adorable:

She worried me because she was eating Cheetos the whole time she was there — non stop!  You know what ‘Cheetos fingers’ look like: bright orange paste!  She was sweet and darling, but did not speak English so we couldn’t tell her not to touch the knitting (the aforementioned lace, beadwork, fair isle etc.!!!!).  She never did, so my worries were unfounded, but that has never stopped me from worrying before! 😉

Now, if you are a woman of a certain age, you feel the loss of a great actor and beautiful man.  In his day, Paul Newman was George Clooney and Brad Pitt rolled into one, and then some!  OMG!  Paul used to visit Minnesota regularly to race at the Brainerd Speedway.  My former boss met him and has a picture with him, his arm draped around her shoulders.   ::Swoon::

I am slowly working on the second sleeve to my Aran Wrap.  Then I tackle the peplum.  Fall is here and I am into my sweaters, so I better get going!

P.S. From Sally:

Here’s a photo of Mr. Newman that I am rather fond of.

  1. Whew. You had me worried for a bit there. I thought you’d both gone on hiatus. I really wish I could have gotten to Brookdale Mall, but I was working. Someday, I’ll be able to come and play with the big kids. Someday.

  3. Ah yes, I too am mourning the loss of Paul Newman. My first job after college graduation in the mid-sixties was on the Registrar’s Office staff at the same university. On my first day at work, I almost fainted when Paul Newman walked in the office, sat down at his desk, and began working! Of course, it turned out that the man was not Paul Newman, but a dead-ringer for Paul, those beautiful blue eyes and all. He looked the age that Paul was in the picture that you have posted here on the blog. And, he was as nice a person as I have always read that Paul Newman was. People were always commenting on his extreme resemblance to Mr. Newman. Needless to say, it made my workday go by quickly when I had a Paul Newman lookalike just a few feet away from my desk!

  4. Hi there, the show looks like it was going down a treat, everyone happily knitting away. Its nice to see a young one having ago at knitting even if she has sticky fingers. I would have been worried to. Ahhh, Paul Newman will be missed. Julie.C

  5. What a nice day for knitting and letting others learn ( get addicted)!
For some reason hearing about Paul Newman upset me more than usual,I don’t care too much about actors or follow their lives- but this man I admired ever since seeing Butch Cassidy and Sun Dance Kid. Maybe- it saddens me because this was a time of my youth?

  7. Paul Newman was old enough to be my grandfather, but I couldn’t agree more with your assessment. He was a beautiful man, inside and out. What a loss.

I didn’t realize that Knit Out was last Sunday. Though I doubt I would have hoofed it all the way from St. Paul to Brookdale with the 8 mos. preggo belly. One of these years! Looks like you had a lot of fun.

  8. My favorite “photo” of Mr. Newman was seeing him lounged against his VW Bug in worn jeans and a torn up sweatshirt waiting for his daughters to finish classes at a natural science museum. That bug had a Porche engine in it so could beat anything the teenaged kids in the area had (mustangs and other muscle cars).

It does look like a good time was had by all. Hopefully it, and the mall, can continue and grow.

  9. I think the world should formally adopt the name Paul Newman Blue for the lovely blue of his eyes.

  10. Girls- By all accounts, no-one had a bad thing to say about Paul Newman. He was a regular guy who loved his family and racing,
as well as a very generous humanitarian who gave so much for sick children.

We sure need more celebrities like him.
