From Susan — A Visit to DC, Part Deux

For those of you who thought the stories from DC were over — think again!  Yes, there’s more!  Two posts for the price of one.

One of the things I did when I visited Sally was work on my Maia Shoulderette designed by Romi Hill.  The reason I could not finish it here was because I was out of yarn.  I was using yarn from my stash: Colinette Jitterbug in a light green with rust highlights (Moss)…but I made two fatal mistakes:  1- I added a repeat even though I didn’t mean to (don’t ask!) and b- chose a yarn without much yardage.

When Sally and I bought the yarn, we got three skeins of ~330 yards each in anticipation of each making socks.  So I am the yarn hog.  I brought my almost finished Maia to DC and worked on it non-stop until that bad boy was done.  By the end, the rows were ENDLESS!!!   I think I probably used two full skeins to finish it.

The fun thing about this pattern is the start: Romi uses a play on the garter tab cast on, incorporating a large leaf motif:

The bottom edge:

Here you can see the unusual shape — a “stay on your shoulders” kind of shape:

Sally and I both worked on this shawlette.  She wrote some notes on her Ravelry project page that describe both of our thoughts about this pattern.

I’m not sure exactly when I’ll wear this, but it is kind of cute.

  1. It’s an interesting pattern but I think it is the choice of yarn that makes it modern and special. It makes me wish I looked good in rust and green.

  2. Looks lovely in the Jitterbug and it is definitely short yardage. I received several skeins from my mother which she purchased while on vacation not knowing how short the yardage is. It makes lovely fingerless gloves.

  3. It’s very cute! I love the color choice, it reminds me of copper and verdigris.

  4. Oh, more than ‘kind of cute’. I really like it a LOT. I think the yarn choice, despite the problems, is just right. It looks very classy and wearable. I want to make one! Wonder what I’ve got in my stash that would work. 🙂

  5. I really like the pattern, but I loathe the color — at least the way my monitor displays it. I’ve never had a chance to fondle Jitterbug, but I hope the feel is way nicer than the color! 😀

  9. I did the same thing, did 5 repeats accidentally. Ran out of yarn. I’m in a holding pattern, even though I went ahead and bound off. Yours turned out lovely. I may have to go back and do some ripping to finish mine properly. You’ve inspired me!

  10. I love the way that neckline looks like a proper collar instead of bunching up as shawls tend to do.

  12. I bought Romi’s ebook. OMG, it is WONDERFUL. I am making this shawl out of Artyarn 5 cashmere on size 4mm needles. It is so lovely. Romi is truly a design genius when it comes to lace. I love love love this shawlette. Thanks, ladies. I needed another new project.
