From Sally — Needing Some Shelter

Filed under: Raglan Turtleneck — surly @ 1:48 pm

It’s December 1st and we were under a tornado warning earlier today.  Say what?  It’s been windy and rainy and the temperature has dropped twenty degrees since I woke up this morning.   In other words, a perfect day to stay home and knit.  I’ve gone back to my husband’s Shelter sweater because Christmas is fast approaching and — please sit down before continuing — my 19-year-old son just asked me to knit him a sweater for Christmas.  And he spontaneously told me that all his friends “love” the gloves I made him two years ago.

The slightest suggestion that someone actually wants any of my knitting sends me straight to a yarn store, so as soon as I finish my husband’s turtleneck, I’ll try to start and finish my son’s before the holidays.

In the meantime, back to doing raglan shaping.  Why — even after having gotten rid of 90+ stitches — do the rows still go so slowly?  Here are some progress shots.

  2. From Susan — I don’t know what shocks me more: the fact that Sterling asked you to knit him something or that he’s bragging you up to his friends! Wow! Talk about knit worthy! PS — Matt’s sweater is looking great!

  3. That’s a great color for a guys’ sweater. Nice and rich. He doesn’t happen to have blue eyes does he? And wow!…a son asking for knitting. Warms the cockles of my heart!

  4. You call it his Shelter sweater–is that the pattern name or are you making this one up as you go? Looking yummy!

  5. Oops–just realized that Shelter is the name of the wool, not the pattern. Well, lovely wool AND lovely pattern! (Now if you ever consider making a pattern, there may be one or two of us who’d purchase…just sayin’ 😉 )

    Cheer, Barbie O.

  6. I live for those moments when my teenagers ask me to knit them something. Off to the yarn store is right!

  7. I’m amazed that he was able to keep a Pair of Gloves intact for two years! Let alone that he wants more.
    Happy Knitting

  9. Great sweater, and I couldn’t agree more. (About the immediate response to dear ones asking for knitting and the feeling that yoke rows are tremendously long!)

  11. Love those gloves. Are there details about yarn and pattern in the archives?

  12. Oh, as the mother of two sons, I totally get the significance of this. My younger son’s wife is a knitter and she can’t even knit him anything. Ungrateful wretches.

  13. I love those gloves, too!

  14. (Bold)**I**(unbold)almost needed to sit down when I read this! Congratulations.

I was asked for as many black socks as I would knit by one of my sons. I knit 2 and told him gray from here on in. I am reconsidering this because he really does like hand knits and neither of the other boys do. It is so good when they really appreciate the product.
