From Sally — A Reader’s Emergency (Now Fixed!)

Filed under: Uncategorized — surly @ 3:04 pm

Peggy, one of our readers, has posted this in the comments:

“I’m attempting to finish a Debbie bliss pattern from Junior Knits. It’s the Molly bolero. It needs to be finished by Friday (I’m in big trouble). I can’t get the front edging to come out right, I’ve tried everything, the instructions don’t make sense to me. Has anyone had experience with this pattern. My grandaughter has to wear it on Saturday morning and right now it looks like I should have made her a shawl (or bought one). Thanks for any help. Peggy.”

Ack!

I did a google search and found a photograph at this link.

Can you be a bit more specific about what it is that’s not working? Can you describe what’s going wrong? Does everything else about the bolero seem to work? If you can provide a bit more information, one of us (or one of our other readers) might be able to help. (Note that the person who knitted the one in the photo I linked to did the side seams first so that she could do the ribbing in the round. Would that help you? If nothing else, maybe you can contact that knitter through her blog.)

P.S. I’ve been emailing back and forth with Peggy, as was Susan. We think we’ve figured out the problem she was having with the directions. Thanks to everyone who tried to help.

  1. I made this shrug for my DD about 6 weeks ago. Perhaps what is confusing you is the short rowing of the ribbing? You don’t knit even all the way around. Doing what she recommends allows for more curve/shape in the ribbing. It worked out well. Do let me know where you are going wrong, and I will try to help.

  2. This has nothing to do with this post. But I know Susan is trying to get her hands on some Kauni Yarns and I found this website on Purlwise.

  5. Thanks to you all! I’m happy to report that after spending hours frogging, I followed Sally and Susan’s directions and I’m five rows from DONE!! I couldn’t have done it without you, knitter’s are special people. I’ll e-mail a picture. Peggy

  6. From Susan — Sally did all the heavy lifting on this one — I just did a bit of email trafficking. I’m so glad it worked!!

  7. I am working on this bolero and the front edging/collar directions don’t make sense to me. It says to “rib until the last 90 stitches and turn.” That leaves me with 180 stiches (out of 214) that only have 2 rows of ribbing. THe pictures have a much deeper edging than that and I cannot figure out what I am supposed to do. Can you help me with the directions? My 6-year old daughter, for whom I am making this sweater, recently asked me if she was still going to fit into this sweater when I finished it. At this point, I am ready to take out everything and switch to another pattern in hopes that I can get something made for her soon. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

  8. Hi
I know I’m 10 years out of date, and I am a Brit…however, my daughter picked up the book in a charity shop and asked me to knit my granddaughter the bolero Molly, ready for ballet classes on the last Saturday before Easter. I’m still trying to finish it! I’ve undone it 3 times and as with Rebecca’s comment, I can’t make the edging work to look like the picture! I’ve just found your link, I will let you know what happens, if you’re still doing this ?
