From Sally — Silver Belle, Silver Belle

Filed under: Silver Belle — surly @ 4:15 pm

Whew. I finally finished the left yoke. My wrist wasn’t sure it was going to make it through the cables and seed stitch. (My wrist is rather delicate after the “hydraulic desk almost lost my hand episode” that we don’t talk about.) Anyway, I basted the whole thing together so Lucy could have a little modesty and I could see how it is shaping up.

This is a view of the back — you can see the gap where the middle cable panel will be continued. You can also see how I reversed the direction of the twist on the four-stitch cross cables so that the two halves of the back would mirror each other.

Another view of the back.

A side view. (Lucy is a little bustier than I am so I don’t think that the front will look shorter than the back on me. It is something I will keep in mind while blocking, however.)

A couple of views of the front. Again, I changed the twist of the cable on the left yoke.

There is a lot of finishing on this sweater. I still need to seam the sleeves, knit the back cable panel, sew in the yokes, knit the front bands, sew on the buttons, and pick up and knit the collar. I think I’ll work on something else tonight and save the finishing for tomorrow (not that I will have it finished in one day. I won’t.)

  1. Absolutely gorgeous, and I love the color. Cables are so much better with a pale color. It makes me long to start a cable project, but not one that requires so much finishing.

  2. It looks beautiful. I agree with Astrid, the color really sets off the cables. Good luck with the finishing!

  18. Sally- Another success, how do you live with yourself?
It’s a masterpiece of shaping in cables. I am amazed that you
have done all that knitting with a sore wrist.

    Very inspiring.

  20. So pretty — in a breath taking sort of way.

I didn’t realize that Ms. Lucy had no feet. Very cool in a sweater model.

  24. It’s absolutely beautiful! I still am amazed by how quickly you knit! I can’t wait to see it finished. If I didn’t have so many WIP’s I’d jump on the bandwagon and start one for me!

  26. Your sweater and the work you’ve put in it is awe inspiring! It’s beautiful. I hope to be half as talented as you are, some day.

  27. I agree that it was absolutely brilliant to mirror the cables on the yoke. Did you consider mirroring the diamond cables on the peplum, too, or is that one of those things that you only think about when you are already too far along? Not that it matters — the sweater is just stunning.

    Comment by Astrid — September 6, 2007 @ 2:15 pm

  28. Wow. Absolutely beautiful. A blue ribbon winner for sure!

    Comment by Amy — September 6, 2007 @ 3:30 pm

  29. Fabulous! Your work is excellent. I most admire that you altered the cables so that they mirror each other. Love the color!

  30. Ahhh yes….the hand incident…I still remember the screams!

  31. That is stunning! And thank for your the thoughtful photos of the back too. I wasn’t sure about making this but now I’ve seen this post, I’m convinced it needs to go on my queue. Can’t wait to see your silver belle all finished up!!

    Comment by ann — September 6, 2007 @ 10:01 pm

  32. Lovely, just lovely. Mind you, I am insanely jealous, as I have finished a grand total of two rows of this sweater as of last night. I have to keep reminding myself that each row of the peplum is 480 stitches at this point (I’m making the largest size) and that if this were a normal back to a normal sweater, I’d probably have an inch and a half knitted by this point. Or so I tell myself.

  33. Sally – did you read all the comments on the Pavarotti video that I linked? They made me cry. People from everywhere; comments in every language. Amazing. :sigh: And now Madeleine L’Engle. Waaaa!

I love the way you mirrored the cables on your Pinke Belle, btw. It’s just the type of thing that annoys me too. 🙂

  35. That is a seriously beautiful sweater, and you are doing a beautiful job on it! You’re an inspiration.

  36. Not only did your first post about this sweater inspire me to rush out and get the pattern/magazine and some rich, tweedy teal “O Wool” merino and cotton blend to make it, NOW I’m lusting after Lucy (in a figurative sort of way of course). Where did you find her? Is it possible to purchase a “Lucy” clone? Eagerly awaiting Lucy info as well as photos of your finished Silver Belle!

    Cheers, Barbie O.

  38. I know what it’s like to be disappointed in results… but I think your sweater (in this post AND the more recent one) is beautiful. Very smart to switch the cable directions…. Love the pattern… wish I had the shape to wear it!

    Comment by PainterWoman — September 14, 2007 @ 1:11 am

  39. I don’t know if I am doing this right. I am a far better knitter than computer whiz! I finished my Silver Belle last week, and am similarly disappointed. I used a slightly thinner yarn and a 7 needle, hoping it would be smaller. I am between a 32 and 34 bust, and knit the small. I feel that it fits like a rather ill-fitting coat! It looks particularly bad in the back if it is not sitting perfectly up on my shoulders. I had my Silver Belle at my local (NJ) guild meeting on Monday, and editors from Vogue Knitting were at the meeting, and seemed to feel that it looked fine.( I passed on to them the name of your website because I found it to be very inspiring and amusing!).  That being said, I still feel that it is a UFO since I know I will never wear it the way it is now. I think the collar adds to the lack of polish, and I am playing with the idea of making a firmer Shawl Collar, and possibly lining the button bands. I also reversed the cables on the back, but did not even think to cross the cables on the same rows- what a great idea! As experienced at ” reading” pictures in magazines as I am, I’m still surprised I did not realize that this sweater would have such a roomy fit. I think I was expecting more of an “Anthropologie” style, cute indoor sweater at the end… Oh well- I suppose that why I stopped knitting for myself, and only knit Dale ski sweaters(not fitted! ) for my boys for years! Thank you again for such a superlative website! Pat
