From Susan — Seeing White Elefantes

My third wee FO is my third wee Elefante…it turned out as cute as Number One.  I am so relieved!  If there was one cute Elefante and two daughters, it would not turn out well!

Of course it has to be in her school colors.    And the obligatory “butt shot:”

Cascade 220

And this picture is for Sally — we have the most gorgeous snow falling right now.  The grainy white specks are actually flakes (not the best photo!).  Maybe it will snow while you are here.

We’ve had fabulous snow for cross country skiing which is thrilling my DH to no end!  Yay!

PS — if you have not visited for a while, please scroll down to see Sally’s Bohus and to read about the event this week at the American Swedish Institute.

From Susan — Another Wee Project

One way to generate FOs is to knit really tiny projects !  This one I started yesterday upon purchasing the latest Piecework Magazine, and I finished it today.  My mini-FO is certainly no rival for the masterpiece that Sally is working on.  I have the same kit in my stash and need to get going on it.  I feel very behind now!

If you only buy one Piecework, make it this one!  The issue has historical knitting as its focus and it is a small treasure — a fun, fun read with some great information.

Here is the crown of the cap:

I used oddments of Hebridean 2 ply from my stash in very different colors than those called for — I try not to second guess Alice very often, but I thought it was okay in this case!  It was a putzy and annoying knit, but over quickly.  I suspect that Alice is hoping to bring some new fair isle knitters into the fold, and I hope she succeeds!  The cap is small: measuring 5″ from brim to crown with an overall circumference of 14 inches.  I have no idea what I will do with it, or even why I made it, but it is done and I like it.

This week we are giddy in anticipation of the Bohus festivities, and I am also very excited to observe the inaugural from afar.  What a wonderful history lesson for all of us.

From Susan — Something Wee

Some things you make to wear.  Some you make to give.  And some you make to love.  This lil dude falls into the last two categories.   I swear that Ravelry will be the death of me because I keep getting drawn into new projects!  I stumbled onto this one and started it as soon as the Baby Cables was flopped on the floor to dry!

Elefante by Susan B. Anderson

I made him over the course of a couple of evenings and felted him lightly to soften the stitch definition.  You can see by the soda can that he is a small and lovable creature!   He was knit with Galway worsted wool from my stash using size US 5 dpns — really, any worsted should work fine.  The pattern called for crocheted ears but I knitted mine instead — my crocheting is non-existent!

I was making him (her?) for Person A…until Person B saw him and laid claim.  Person C protested the favorable treatment and placed an order.  Person D (moi) wants her own!!  And now I hear requests are coming in from other family members!  It’s a case of Fetching Glovelets all over again, although these are a lot putzier!  Just knitting four legs each time is a bit off putting.  But he is 2cute4words so what can I do??

PS — I finished the second one and s/he is just not as cute 🙁 .  I think the trunk is too long and the head too small.   This will go to Person A because Person A will never know that it is not the cutest, and Person A does not live with me, so I will not be constantly reminded that it is not as cute.   Wish me better luck with Number 3.

PS2: How I did the ears:
Make 1 = pull up running thread and knit with a twist

Using long-tail method, cast on 12 sts.
Row 1 (RS): knit
Row 2 (WS): K1, make 1, knit to last st, make 1, k1 (2 sts inc)

Rep these 2 rows until 20 sts total.  Knit 10 rows garter st (10 ridges will be visible on RS, incl. cast on ridge).

Next row: k2tog, knit to end of row.  Rep 3 more times (16 sts).  Bind off.  NOTE: Bound off edge is sewn to Elefante.

From Susan — Baby Finis

Filed under: Baby Cables and Big Ones too,Updates — lv2knit @ 11:57 am

Finally!  I finished the Baby Cables and Big Ones Too (purchase pattern through Ravelry) before sweater weather is completely over!  I wanted to share some photos showing the wonderful cables and the perfect fit (it does fit — yay!!), but my DH has to be the worst photographer on record.  I am serious.  Fifty tries later and here are the only two shots I saved:

And the “best” of the full body shots:

Yeah — that blurry mess is the best of the lot!  Okay.  Donations to the “Send my Husband to Photography Class” Fund can be sent to post office box…….

Here is Baby Cables on Lettie:

Baby Cables and Big Ones Too in Cascade 220, Color 4009 (8 skeins), US 6 needles

This sweater fits me like a dream — I cannot believe it!  The sleeves are perfect.  The sweater itself is a good length.  All I can say is “whew!”   It is such a rare and wonderful occurrence.  But there is a reason for it.

I kept wondering why this simple sweater took me so bloomin’ long to knit!  BUT — as I have always said — if you could knit something twice, you could get it perfect the second time around, and I did essentially knit this thing twice.  I started with a totally different yarn and got all the way through the yoke and into the body several inches before I decided to restart with the yarn I ended up with.  I knitted three sleeves….

I did the bottom band a total of four times!   Once, as a turned hem, but I thought the sweater might be a tad short.  The second time I tried a gerter border (like the pattern called for) but thought the knitting looked sloppy.  The third time, I reverted to the turned hem and planned on adding a bit of length, but my gauge had changed and was sloppy compared to the original knitting, and very noticeable!  SO, I knitted it a fourth time, tightening my gauge, adding the length, and voila!  Two sweaters for the price of one.  Hey, where’s my other sweater??!!??

But overall I am extremely pleased.  I love the pattern and enjoyed making the first one, less so the second .  What’s next?  A very wee project that I will share in a day or so when it is done.

From Sally — Biding My Time

I’ve got a small case of the knitting doldrums. I don’t know what I want to work on. It’s not that I don’t have projects to work on because I do. I could finish Butterfly. I could work on one of a number of unfinished fair isles (looks askance at Marina’s enviable stack of finished ones). I could start my new Bohus. I could finish my Damask Kauni. My Niebling. My Eris. Or my own Snowflake shawl.

I am just not sure what I want to work on, although I do have some Christmas knitting to start. While I wait for inspiration or interest to hit, I’ve finished two small projects. The first is the cabled fingerless mitts that I posted about a little while ago. Here they are being modeled by my husband, who now expects royalties — or perhaps a pair of gloves with actual fingers.

Next I decided to tackle one of my long lost sock orphans. I’m notorious for knitting one sock or one glove and then moving on. Indeed, here is a photo from one of our earliest blogs showing some of my abandoned socks and gloves.

The light blue sock is the one who now has a mate. They are the Embossed Leaves socks from Interweave, designed by Mona Schmidt. I knit them out of light blue Koigu. Here’s a photo of both of them, modeled by “Anonymous.” They haven’t even been blocked or dressed. They went immediately from the needles to my Anonymous’s feet.

So, now what? I think I’ll go sit in a corner and wait for inspiration to hit.

From Sally — Just a Quick Note

Filed under: Updates — surly @ 12:51 pm

A few of you asked about the pattern for the red socks that I mentioned in my post yesterday:

That is the Lace Cuff Anklet pattern from Hand Jive Knits (maker of Nature’s Palette yarns). They do not sell their patterns directly, but if you google you can find it (and others) easily online.

For those of you who liked the buttons I’m using on Butterfly: They aren’t sewn on yet. I just pinned them in place to get an idea of how they’d look. They’re handmade glass buttons I purchased years ago.

From Susan — Well, THAT Didn’t Work!

I have yet another knitting snafu.  Homage is totally HUGE!!  The back is at least 2.5″ too wide.  I have about 12 inches done and will have to rip back yet again.  I am starting to feel cursed unlucky.  So I will rip back another day.  I love the way it was looking so I will give it another go, just not today.

I started Hanne Falkenberg Plisse instead.  You begin at the back with the center strip:

plisse-ryg-1.jpg picture by lv2knit

I have about 10 inches of the strip done and will show more once I get the back started.  It is supposed to be knit on US 1 & 2 needles, so I automatically went up a needle size — look, Ma, no swatching!  I have done enough Hannes to know how my gauge compares with hers.  The color I chose (#98, Lagoon) is very nice and similar to Sally’s Tangled Yoke:

Color.jpg Color picture by lv2knit

I am very happy with Lyra once again – I am almost back to where I had to rip out.  The chart itself is very easy to follow; the mistake was all mine.  The Fino Alpaca is really nice yarn to work with.  It is a slow moving project, but nice to work on when you want to focus on your knitting.  I am hoping that Plisse has less mental effort involved so it will be portable.

I am thinking of putting the Modular Tote/purse together soon (maybe this weekend?).  All the main knitting is done — just the constructing and handle to do.  Kauni is not far off the radar either.  It will be very wearable so I’d like to get it done soon.

One of our French readers finished this intriguing knit:

LionBrand.jpg picture by lv2knit

I had already purchased the pattern (Lion Brand!!), but have not found suitable yarn.  This is one of those projects that looks like it could go horribly wrong, so I was glad to see that someone had finished it successfully.  We’ll see if it makes it up the queue! 😉

It’s the weekend, so start your knitting!

From Susan — Happy Birthday to You….

This weekend marks the 35th birthday of The Yarnery!  Woo Hoo!

Yarnery.jpg picture by lv2knit

They celebrated with a bit of fanfare.  Kim and I heard the word “freebie” and dashed right over!  I did take part in a small amount of stash enhancement.  I am not one to buy for the sake of buying; I do have specific projects in mind.

Purchases.jpg picture by lv2knit

The red is Cascade 220 in Ruby (color #9404) for the Chinese Lace Pullover.  As I said before, I see it in Chinese lacquer red and this is it.  This yarn is heavier than what is called for, which I will take advantage of by knitting a slightly smaller size (?).  We’ll see once the swatching begins*.  (The book I purchased just to have).

That darned Brooklyn Tweed dude sucked me into this!

Hemlock.jpg picture by lv2knit

It’s a huge doily, turned into a feather and fan throw.  I could not help myself!  It is made using the very heavy weight Cascade Eco Wool and size 10-1/2 needles.  BT’s color is taupier than mine, which is more of an oatmeal shade (color#8016).  There were several colors that I liked so it was hard to choose.

We also received a free gift with purchase :):

FreeGift.jpg picture by lv2knit

Very cute thrummed mittens.  These should be fun to knit once winter draws nigh.

So now the guilts are starting to set in.  It is very tempting to start one of these new projects.  I do have two whips in process, so I really should work on those… 😉

I still have 0% voice.  It was so funny on Thursday at Panera’s.  I went up to the counter to order.  My knitting peep, Linda, was at the counter already and spoke up for me, “She can’t talk.”  The guy says, “Oh, that’s no problem.  I know sign,” and starts doing sign language!  Linda and I just stared at the dude.  “She can’t TALK — but she CAN hear!!”  Jeez, we laughed!

And that brings me full circle to last Thursday’s post.  I really appreciate all of your kind words and encouragement.  Sharing this blog with Sally has helped me strive with my knitting and has exposed me to too many new projects, many great ideas and wonderful uber-cyber-friends.

* I started swatching 🙁 — I’m so naughty!

From Susan — The Minnesota State Fair is HERE

OMG — check out this Big Guy from the Minnesota State Fair:

WhattaBoar.jpg picture by lv2knit

I’ll try not to boar you any longer!  I just had to go to the Fair today, come rain or shine (it was VERY rainy 🙁 ) and despite the fact that I was sick.  I had entered multiple knitted items in the fair and needed wanted to know how they did.  Attending on the first day is a ritual for me.

Okay.  I am just going to spill it, and you can decide for yourself if I am as big a pig as my friend here, but I entered ten things in the fair. They all received ribbons: 6 first place, 3 second place and 1 third. I also won the Sweepstakes.

So, what did I enter?  Here are two items: My silk Diamond Fantasy Shawl and Camilla Gloves:

DFSandGloves.jpg picture by lv2knit
I entered the gloves last year and got 2nd place.  If you do not get a blue ribbon, you can re-enter the item. I should have quit while I was ahead ;).  I was extremely pleased that the shawl won something because I did not expect it at all.

I also put in the little lace top from Vogue Knitting that I made for my youngest daughter:

VogueLaceTop.jpg picture by lv2knit
She won’t even wear it, but at least it got a ribbon!

Next are a pair of socks I made right before the fair.  I wasn’t sure that they would win anything because so many very talented people knit socks…lots and lots of socks — they did get second place even though you can’t see the ribbon:

Socks.jpg picture by lv2knit
The pattern is from “More Sensational Socks” and they are knitted with Fortissima Socka Bamboo in Color 07 Ocean.

I also threw in one of my Lace Tams for the heck of it and was stunned it got a BLUE ribbon:

LaceTam.jpg picture by lv2knit
It is knit in Rowan Silk Wool DK.

I finally got the zipper sewn into Eris and it received a blue ribbon:

EriswithRibbon.jpg picture by lv2knitEris.jpg picture by lv2knit
I struggled mightily with the zipper pulls.  I cut off the ones that came with the zipper — perhaps an OOPS! — and then made 457 attempts at “pretty” zipper pulls.  It was crazy. I finally ended up using some beads I already had and attached them with wire wrapping.

My Peacock Shawl did very well and I was surprised and very pleased about that.  I know a lot of people knit fabulous shawls so I knew the competition would be tough:

PeacockShawl.jpg picture by lv2knit

The Modular Tote also did well:

ModularTote.jpg picture by lv2knit

Another total surprise was Ballerina.  I finished Ballerina last year but did not have a category to put it into, so I entered it this year in the plain knitting cardigan category.

Ballerina.jpg picture by lv2knit
You can see it also won the knitter’s Guild Award, but I have no idea how that is determined.  And I’m not sure what it means either!

When I got into the building I started looking for my things and could not find Oregon anywhere.  It was not in any of the main knitting cases.  Sometimes they place knitting in odd places as part of a theme (i.e., Norwegian Sweaters with rosemaling, etc.), so I started searching high and low. I found Oregon between two gorgeous quilts:

OregonSweepstakes.jpg picture by lv2knit
Oregon surpassed all my expectations.  I was hoping it would do well because it was such a thorn in my side for so long and was so darned much work!!  I was beside myself!  It was thrilling to see those ribbons, I must admit.

I was equally thrilled to see that my dear friend, Kim, won a blue ribbon for her gorgeous Cats and Mice mini-afghan:

KimsBlankie.jpg picture by lv2knit
When I got there, the little cats were standing on their heads, so I asked them to flip it around — and they did!  I knew this darling blankie would do well.  I’m so proud of Kim.  It is an Alice or Jade (?) Starmore design.

I’m also VERY proud of my friend Linda who won second place for her cookies.

LGsCookies.jpg picture by lv2knit
She is a great cook and very deserving!  The only bummer was that my other friend did not get a ribbon for her ethnic bread, but she will try again next year.

Now, could I do a state fair post and leave out the infamous Sock Monkeys — au contraire, mes amies!  Our lil sock monkey fiend friend has been hard at work all year exploiting perfecting the sock monkey concept:

SockMonkeyChair.jpg picture by lv2knit
And perhaps more practical for you:

SockMonkeyHat.jpg picture by lv2knit

All in all a great time — until I got laryngitis.  I mentioned that I was sick and it did go into my chest/throat.  I hope this bout is shorter than last time (a full week!).

I’m sure by now you are thoroughly bored, but are you as boared as this 1200 pounder?

Boar.jpg picture by lv2knit

And I know what you are thinking — yes, they are HUGE!!
