Sleeping Baby’s Castle Blanket Pattern Details

This sweet fairytale blanket — a castle surrounded by vines and turret ribs — can be used as a baby’s blanket or as a small throw or lap blanket.

Directions for two versions are provided: the original with the whimsical castle motif as well as a “turret rib only” version that omits the central castle panel. Directions for both versions are given in chart form and with row-by-row instructions (non-charted).

The blankets shown used approximately 1000 yards, but it is recommended that you purchase slightly more than that to account for differences in gauge and to allow for swatching.

Close up of the central castle panel:

Shown in cream:

Susan’s version:

The green blanket was knit out of Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Worsted; the cream blanket was made with Cascade’s 220 Superwash.   Susan’s was knit out of Plymouth’s Worsted Merino Superwash.

Quick facts about the pattern:

Size: Approximately 32 by 40 inches after blocking.

Gauge: 18 stitches and 28 rows over four inches.

Yarn Requirements: You will need approximately 1100 yards of worsted weight yarn. (Each of my blankets used slightly less than that, but I prefer to give a quantity that allows for gauge differences as well as swatching.)

Instructions: Provided in both chart and row-by-row format.  Two versions of the pattern are included; the bonus version omits the central castle panel.

Cost: $5.00

How to Purchase:

Sleeping Baby’s Castle is available through Ravelry .  Whether or not you are a Ravelry member, you can purchase the pattern by clicking the link below.  You will be taken directly to a purchase page; after purchase, you will receive a link to download the PDF of the pattern.

  2. Just wanted to say in the written part of the pattern Row 23 should end with K1, P5 – chart is correct.

  3. *LOVE* this pattern. will likely make several. I think the written instructions have an error. To match the main chart and the photos Row 88 should be k89 (not p89). Thanks for a great pattern.

  4. Here a response to Gudrun’s inquiry.
Hallo Gudrun, ich wohne in Edmonton, Kanada. Hast Du schon mal Paypal benutzt? Viel Glueck! Meike 🙂

  7. I’m a new knitter (this is my second project), so there is a very good chance this could be operator error. I’m about to start the castle inset; while I was reading the written directions, I decided to put the turrent row number next to the inset row number to make it easier for me to keep track of where I am in the pattern. I started with turrent row (TR) #10 at inset row (IR) #2; TR #11 at IR #3, and so on. Problem is I didn’t get three repeats–I got as far as the third TR #21 at IR #89. What am I missing? I even went to far as to divide 24 into 89. It does work three times, but when when I added 15 (rows 10 through 24 + row 1) + 24, and then divided by 89. It didn’t work. Is this going to magically work out, so I should take the plunge and start knitting the inset? Thanks

P.S. This has been a dream to knit. Row 5 stymied me, and I had to tink the first iteration twice, but it’s been a breeze since then. I fell in love with this pattern the moment I saw it. I’ve been a bit of a braggart about it and show it to everyone with a flourish. Even the men seem to like it. Well done for designing this!

  8. Sally,

I have been knitting this blankie since March and love it. The castle inset took me a few months, but to my surprise, it looks (pretty much) just like the picture. Needless to write, I am pleased with myself. I’ve been totally impressed with you for designing this. It’s totally rocket science.

I am sorry to write that I am having difficulty with the start of the turrets above the castle. I have knit the first 11-ish rows (starting at row “90”) three times, and keep having the same problem: the “bumpy” stitches at the bottom of the first row of turrets are on the WS. As I knitted the castle, the odd rows were the RS; this pattern continued up through the turrets (odd turret row = RS, even turret row = WS). I know I’m knitting row “90” on the WS as the directions read, which puts me on track for row “91”–RS–which is row 3 of the turrets. But, for some reason, the definition is on the WS. Even the garter “bump” created between 88 & 89 is on the WS. In looking at the picture, the bottom of the turrets above the castle have the same stitch definition as the bottom of the turret row above it. That’s not happening for me.

If you could offer some insight as to what I’m doing wrong, I would appreciate it.

    Thanks.

  9. How awesome is this!!! Holy moley – again! No wonder I got so little creativity — you got it all! LOL

I hope this pattern is still available.

  10. This is a lovely blanket and I just purchased the pattern. I am curious about the comments above that mention changes to the pattern and am wondering whether I should be changing the pattern?

  11. I just purchased the baby’s castle blanket pattern through pay pal. My email has changed from admittelholzer@yahoo.com to annemittel@gmail.com. I can not access the pattern. Any suggestions?

  13. The blanket is lovely and I’ve enjoyed knitting it so far.
The problem I’m having is the same problem as an earlier poster: The torrents above the castle are forming on the WS of the work. I have frogged it and reknitted it several times.
I am following the written directions and have checked against the chart and am still having the pattern show up on the WS.
Any help you could give me to correct this matter would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Elizabeth

  14. I think I would make the central castle with some extra vines and none of those cabled tree trunks. I can cable, but don’t like to…
