From Susan — Earth Mothers Gone Wild

This is a tale from my long and sordid past.  When I was a mere twenty-something, I fancied myself to be quite the crafter.  I dabbled in everything: tatting, embroidery, crewel, knitting, and it was the hey day of my sewing years.

The other day I was reading Yarn Harlot and had a total flash back — the post was about loom weaving.  OMG!  I remembered that I own a loom!!  I have owned a loom for decades, but have never even taken the bloomin’ thing out of the box:

You can see that the box has suffered many moves over the years and yet the loom itself is brand new…untouched as it were.

Why has it not been removed from the box, you might ask?  This:

“Owners of Natural Erica Looms should apply a finish before assembly.”  Okay, then, buh bye!!  I shut that box so fast it would make your head spin and I have not opened it since!!  The thought of sanding and varnishing and whatever else just turned me completely off from weaving.  They are out of production but available here and there —  someone else bought “my” loom at a garage sale for $5!!!

My fantasy about weaving was that I would knit a sweater and then weave fabric to make a matching skirt ala Harris Tweed.  Oh, well.  Maybe I’ll get it out someday and actually put it together, but for now, back in the box, Erica (“No, no, not the box!!”).

From Susan — My Socks ARE Knocked Off

Last evening I had so much fun!  My knitting group started an annual holiday tradition several years ago.  Mary — knitting peep and wonderful hostess! — has our Thursdays at Four group to her home and does all of the cooking.  This year, yummy spaghetti with all of the trimmings!  We then sit, chat, laugh, and have a gift exchange.  It is really one of the highlights of my holiday season.

Mary presented me with an additional surprise:

It is a book with a ton of hilarious pictures of sock monkeys in different garb and circumstances.  I laughed  until I cried  !

Thanks to all of you for a wonderful evening!!

From Susan — All This Has Happened Before….

The title is a shout out to Battle Star Galactica (Go, Cylons — woo hoo!).  Anyway, all these glovelets have happened before and will happen again…

I have been knitting up massive quantities of glovelets.  Most are being made with my new favorite glovelet pattern: Baby Fan Mitts.   Here is a picture of the most recent pair, with two more pairs to go (black just does not photograph well!):

Baby Fan Mitts using Misti Alpaca Worsted, US Sz 3 dpns

I have a new pattern to add to my repertoire for glovelets.  I wanted to make a pair with stash worsted weight yarn, so my old standby “Fetching Glovelets” came to mind.  I could not bring myself to make another pair — at least not right now.  But as luck would have it, I stumbled upon a free pattern designed by good friend and loyal reader, Twinset Ellen.  The pattern is called “Handed Yes, Fingered No: Mitts That Fit” and is free on the blog she shares with her twin sister, Jan.

Sublime Yarns Cashmere Merino Silk Aran — 75% merino, 20% silk, 5% cashmere (color Clipper, 2 skeins, 188 yards, US Sz 5 dpns)

They are a very quick knit, nicely written pattern, and fit very well.  The pattern calls for two colors that stripe throughout.  I used a solid color, so mine looked a little plain.  I crocheted a simple edging to jazz them up a bit.

On a completely unrelated note, the other day I got an email from a Los Angeles knitting store called Knit Culture.  They said they had just made our Topsy Turvy Moebius and were going to do a class on it!   What can I say — this was exciting news!!

Now, stop reading and start knitting!

Special Note from Kendyl:
“On an only slightly related note- Lt. (or Captain) Starbuck aka Katee Sackhoff wandered into my open house (I’m a Realtor in CA) a few weeks ago.  I did not behave well- as in “cool”.  Pretty surreal to have a character you are somewhat obsessed with walk right into you.”

I am so envious!!  Starbuck is one of my favorite characters — I ? her!!  In the new BSG, Starbuck remained a hard drinking, cigar smoking, fighter pilot — the only thing they changed was the gender!!

From Susan — Road Trip!!

Last Monday I met up with some fun knitting peeps at a LYS near my work.  Beth mentioned the new knitting store in Mahtomedi called Lila and Claudine’s and, hey, I’m in!!  We all decided to head to Mahtomedi on Friday to check it out.  It was well worth the trip.

When you enter the building, you need to go downstairs to the huge shop (because of the stairs, it is not “accessible”):

The elaborate decorating on the stairs gives you an inkling of things to come!  Here are some pictures that give you an idea of this fun and whimsical shop…

Wow, right?  It is a kaleidoscope of color and fun.  It took me at least 20 minutes to notice the yarn — and they do have a very impressive inventory.  Truth be told, it is a gift shop as much as a knitting store, but there is plenty for all.  Sisters Polly and Kirsten own the store, which is named for their grandmothers.  They are both warm, welcoming and VERY helpful.  They encourage knitters to stop and knit a while!

I did buy a little bit of yarn because they had some things I had not seen elsewhere.  I’ll show it as I knit it up — it is mostly for some more small Christmas projects.   We ate down the street at a little Italian deli called Roma’s that boasts a fine menu and a woodfire pizza oven.  Mahtomedi is northeast of St. Paul, but it only took about 30-40 minutes for me to get there.

To wrap it up, here is a picture of either Lila or Claudine!

From Sally — Ack! Three Weeks ’til Christmas!

Filed under: Back Story — surly @ 1:35 pm

Mayhaps I was a bit too ambitious in my Christmas knitting projects; unfortunately, it’s too late to turn back now. Let’s do a progress check.

1. Vivian cardigan.

This is the sweater I’m knitting for my daughter, and it’s the one that will definitely be ready. Over Thanksgiving, I carried out my blindfold and camisole threat. The sweater fit her very nicely. Whew. (I took photos, but somehow I don’t think she’d appreciate my posting them.)

All of the knitting is finished. Yesterday, I sent the sweater off to my ultra-top secret zipper queen whose identity none of you will ever guess. So one project down.

2. Throw/blanket for my son.

I can’t show you progress pictures or discuss this in detail because it’s an as yet unreleased pattern and I am basically a test knitter. The key word, in terms of Christmas projects, is “blanket.” What was I thinking? It’s about half done. That also means it’s about half not done.

3. Open Cable Cardigan for my husband.

This project has been on the back burner to use a technical knitting term. I pulled it out again after mailing Vivian to the zipper queen. Hmmm. I thought I was almost to the armholes. I’m nowhere close.

I can’t show you what it will look like because it’s all in my head. My imaginary sweater is lovely; let’s hope it turns out. Here is what I have thus far.

There is an open cable running up each side of the sweater, dividing the fronts from the back. I plan to have one running up the middle of each sleeve as well. The yarn is City Tweed HW by Knitpicks in the colorway “Tabby.” I had bought that yarn for myself — my husband actually likes scratchy, rough wools. However, he saw this and loved the color so I’m using it for him. (Anyone need/want sweater quantity of some scratchy, rough, manly wool? ‘Cause I had already bought some for him and now I don’t know what to do with it.)

So, it’s three weeks until Christmas and I have to knit half a blanket and virtually all of a sweater. Who could have done this to me? I have no enemies.

From Susan — Which Came First…?

…the cardinal or the egg?  In this case, the egg!  This is another of the cute toys from Itty-Bitty Toys (Susan B. Anderson).  This was the last toy in the book, but one of the cutest!  I made it for my great-niece (if she can pry it away from me!).

Here is what you see at first:

Cute lil egg in rustic “nest”

Turn the egg inside out and voila:

Out pops the baby bird!

This is clever!  The original pattern has a bluebird, but I had red yarn in stash so I made a cardinal.  I added the little “faux-hawk” and a tail.  I made my nest out of bulkier Lopi yarn, so I cast on 48 sts instead of 60 and it is the perfect size.  This project was far less putsy than the Santa and takes almost no yarn!

Pattern: Egg to Bluebird and a Little Nest, Too from Itty-Bitty Toys
Grade: A
Yarn: Cascade 220 in Red and Natural; Lopi Bulky in Dark Brown
Needles: US 3 or 4 dpns (?) — can’t remember!
Changes: very few, though next time I will sew the head and wings to the body before joining the egg to the body

PS — Ann said, “Alright… that might be the cutest thing ever.  I’m a sucker for the nesting toys that hide something else.  You know, like those Russian Dolls?  Oooo, maybe someone will make a pattern for those too….”

Well, they’re in there, too!

From Susan — Turkey Hangover!

My, I ate a lot yesterday!  Oh, well. It is the tradition we have grown to love.  My beloved FIL did all of the cooking (with daughter Mary’s help) but said he just couldn’t do it any more.  It really is hard to see him get older and unable to do what he enjoys.

Today I did something I NEVER do: I woke up at 4:30 am and ran out to Target to buy a $3 toaster (page 21)!  My husband thought I was crazy…hey, crazy smart!  I did indeed snag me a $3 toaster that I plan on taking to work.  I did not want to spend a lot (check) because I knew it was not an appropriate charge for reimbursement (check).  So, I marched into Target with hundreds of other idiots bargain hunters who were there for much more interesting items.

On the gift-knitting front — I have opted for much smaller scale projects than Surly.  Here you see the latest of my recent FOs, knit for my niece (sister to the Marsan Watchcap recipient):

The pattern is Baby Fan Mitts by Morgan Wolf (free Ravelry download).  I loved the feather and fan lace and the fact that the right and left glovelets are identical.  I also liked what Morgan said about the sizing:

“The gloves measure 6.5 inches (16 cm) around and 6.5 inches (16 cm) from cuff to top. Thanks to the stretchiness of the lace, they are comfortable for hands up to 8 inches so they fit women’s size medium to large. Adjustments to size can be made by adjusting yarn and needle size.”

Not being sure of Tara’s size, I like the idea that they stretch to fit just about anyone.  They do fit me very well and would certainly fit someone with smaller hands.  I do not think mine would stretch to 8″ though because my bind off is too tight.  If Tara’s hands ARE larger than mine, I will need to redo the bind off.

The only change I made was to the decreases — Morgan has all of the decreases worked as “k2tog.”  I changed the two at the end of the pattern repeat to SSK for symmetry.

Project Summary

Grade: A

Pattern: Baby Fan Mitts by Morgan Wolf

Yarn: Misti Alpaca Suri Alpaca and Silk (80% Suri Alpaca, 20% Silk; 109 yards per 50 grams, 2 skeins)

Color: Deep Velvet #2015

Needles: US Size 3 dpns

From Both of Us — Happy Thanksgiving!

Filed under: Updates — Both Sisters @ 2:16 am

We are so happy this year to be spending the day with our families — unfortunately not everyone together in the same place, but all of us with someone!  Susan’s husband works crazy shifts and this is the first holiday in a very long time that he will be able to spend the day with his father and siblings, of course with Susan and daughters in tow.  Our dad is visiting Sally (if she can get him out of the Air and Space Museum 😉 ), and Nora is home from school for the Thanksgiving holiday.  Sally has another special visitor and may share a photo!  Brother Barry is with his kids and his wife’s side of the family.   So together but separate are we.

Hope all of you are sharing this holiday with someone you love.

ETA from Sally: Yep — my Little Assistant is visiting for the holiday. It’s really good to see him.

From Sally — A Camisole and a Blindfold

Filed under: Vivian Cardigan — surly @ 10:23 am

That sounds a bit kinky, doesn’t it?

I’m almost finished with Vivian, the sweater I am knitting for my daughter for Christmas. She’s home for Thanksgiving, and I’m a little nervous about the fit because I’ve made changes to the pattern and I am not using the called for yarn. A fitting would make me feel better, but I don’t want her to see the sweater. That’s where the blindfold comes in.

Here are some really poor photos of Vivian in progress. I took these yesterday without looking at them, and they’re just not great photos. Lucy, my model, has no arms and therefore the sleeves (which are narrow) look odd. I’ve slipped the sweater on and it looks much better on a real live body. (Hey — maybe I can take some pictures while my daughter is blindfolded! Hee.) Also, the hood doesn’t look like a hood yet. Instead, it looks like a collar on steroids. I’d retake the pictures, but because my daughter is home I don’t want to risk her walking in on me.

So here are some not great photos of a sweater that really is pretty in person.

From Susan and Sally — We Love Our Pets!

Filed under: Free Patterns from The Rainey Sisters — lv2knit @ 1:33 pm

From Susan:

I think all of us with pets love them and think of them as family.  I had several comments and questions about the small version of the Santa Christmas stocking that was made for our dog: is there a pattern?  How did I make it?  So, I decided to write up the changes that I made to the original Bernat Stocking and offer it here as a free pattern.

Santa Stocking for Dog or Cat

It is also linked under our Free Patterns section on the right hand side of the blog and may not be perfect!  I made the original for my dog, who is now going on 10 years old, so cut me a little slack.  Feel free to embellish it like crazy!!

The charted letters in this stocking are smaller than those in the original pattern.  They are the size I used for Nathaniel’s stocking.

From Sally:

Thor the Wonder Puppy has his own stocking, too. Here’s what I did to personalize his.

PS (12:35 pm central time) — I made one small correction to the pattern — there may be more!!
