From Susan — A Little Update

I sent off Surly’s yarn and squares for her own Geddy Tee.

Her main color is Malabrigo Rios Denim.

I have also been playing around with a knitted granny square.  I wanted to teach the Geddy Tee as a class, but many of my knitting friends don’t crochet.  I checked out Ravelry and found a square by Barb Salpekar that I used as a starting point for my version.  I’m pretty happy with it.  I will share it initially with people who sign up for the class, but I’ll probably put it up on Ravelry at some point.

Here are the two squares (the left one is knitted):

Not perfect, but close enough!!  Happy cro-knitting!!

PS to Marina:  I did use Betty Salpekar’s pattern for my initial inspiration and asked her if I could adapt it.  She is credited in the pattern I came up with, as well.  My square is quite different than hers and will be published for free after the Geddy Tee class I’m teaching gets started.  I will announce when it is available in the next couple of weeks.

  1. How clever! I’ve been fantasizing about this sweater since your last post about it. I am very interested in this all knit option!

  2. Love the idea of a knitting version. Not likely to do a sweater at this point, but I have seen some designs where a row or two strategically placed on the bodice makes a beautiful design. As a non-crocheter (I tried!) OF COURSE I bought several issues of the Interweave Crochet magazine for the sheer joy and inspiration of them.. If I run across one particular pattern (one day I will unearth them) I will share the issue date here for anyone interested. It may not have made it to Ravelry.

  3. Just checked Ravelry and apparently there are Plenty of granny square garment patterns to choose from! But I will post this Magazine one anyway, when I find it, in case someone might love it.

  4. I love granny squares and your use of Malabrigo is brilliant! It brings a lot of character to the color of the squares. I am a lifelong knitter and one day decided to learn how to crochet a granny square but found my hands were sore afterward. Knitting is a muscle memory skill and I think it may have been my hands were unaccustomed to the hook. I’m thinking I may try again after seeing your squares.

  5. Found the square, the designer is Betty Salpekar on Ravelry in case anyone is having difficulty sourcing.

  6. Oh cool – thanks for the update, I’ll keep an eye out. Hope it didn’t sound like i was accusing you of plagiarism or anything like that, certainly was not my intention, I was just interested in the concept of a knitted granny square and wanted to find out how!
