From Susan — What Opens Must Also Close

Filed under: Updates — surly @ 3:13 pm

Per my previous post, I reverse engineered the 2026 Winter Games Hat. I also looked at the Closing Ceremonies Hat. The Ralph Lauren version is knit at very tiny gauge, but I didn’t have any interest in that! So, I used worsted weight and created a “similar” rendition!

I started writing up the pattern and got too depressed to continue. I live in the Twin Cities and we are under siege. Our community is suffering. I just could not use my limited bandwidth to continue. However, I do share my charts on my project page. There should be enough information there to knit up this hat.

I will also be knitting myself a Norwegian Resistance Hat. Needle and Skein in St. Louis Park will be hosting a KAL for this. Apparently, occupied Norwegians started wearing long, red pointy hats with tassels to show a sign of their resistance. The Nazis finally made them illegal to make, wear, or sell. Needle and Skein is taking up the call. I’m not sure when the pattern will be available, but check back with them.

  1. I’m so sorry for all the pain and stress your community is going through. The country is watching, so is the world, and you’re an inspiration to us all in this horrible time.

I hadn’t heard of that style hat but now I’m getting educated! I will join that KAL from the west coast when it starts, if I can – I’ll keep an eye on their page and subscribed to their emails so hopefully I’ll get the word.

  2. Your hats are amazing!
No I had never heard of the red tasselled resistance hats from Norway. Brilliant idea!
I still see people with the pink cat-ear hats – and I am sure they have no knowledge of the protest origin of those hats.
Hang in there! You are on the right side of history.

  3. Sending love and moral support from Washington (state). I’m so sorry for the nightmare you are living through, and even more your immigrant, black, and brown neighbors.

  4. It is a depressing time and many of us are monitoring events. Even (all too) conservative Indiana, in cities and towns, have been holding support protests in response to the siege events in Minneapolis. We can each protest in ways loud and quiet.

  6. What is happening to you is horrifying. It is something I would expect to see on the news occurring in North Korea. Every Americans should be urgently contacting their Congressional representatives and demanding justice against this Administration’s Gestapo attacks on Americans.

  7. I will try to get the navy and red tomorrow at Knitty City’s 20th Anniversary party. Not sure when I’ll get to this project, but thanks for doing it.

I’m beyond disgusted with what’s going on and pray the nightmare will end sooner than later. Maybe a hat with big bold caps saying “RESIST” should be my next make.
