There are many reasons not to like housework — too numerous to list. But I think I have come up with a new one. Last evening as I was emptying the dishwasher, I put a coffee cup in the left side of the cupboard, which pushed another cup out of the right side of the cupboard: a very heavy, white porcelain mug. It hit the counter and broke, and then proceeded to the floor. A large chunk of it hit me above my heel, right at the location of the Achilles Tendon. It bled like crazy and hurt like hell. The gash is the shape of an inverted “V” with each leg ~1 inch long. I could see white behind the flap of skin and presumed that the shard was still embedded in my ankle. No. It was my tendon (when I heard that I about passed out!!). They stitched me up, but I am in pain and limping.
We have put off our little cookout until tomorrow. And no, Jena (youngest daughter), I did not do this to ruin your life. Though, as we all know, everything I do is done in order to ruin her life! 😉
PS: I love Sivani’s idea of convalescence yarn!!
Whew! That was close. Take care and heal swiftly!

Feel better!
(And geez — she’ll do anything to have an excuse to just sit and knit.)
Comment by surly — July 31, 2010 @ 3:02 pm
Ouch!! I agree that is a reason to swear off housework forever!! Hope it heals quickly.
Comment by Lee Cockrum — July 31, 2010 @ 3:27 pm
I almost passed out just reading about it. I think that everyone who were to come to the cookout should sent you a little “convalescence yarn”, don’t you think?
Comment by Sivani — July 31, 2010 @ 3:58 pm
Ouch! Hope you are feeling better soon!
Comment by Andrea — July 31, 2010 @ 4:48 pm
That’s horrible! Ick.
I do a lot to ruin my daughter’s life too, so I know all about that.
Comment by joanna — July 31, 2010 @ 5:18 pm
Oh no! Heal up quick!
Comment by Nora aka Surly's daughter — July 31, 2010 @ 6:19 pm
I am so glad your Achilles tendon was not damaged. THAT would have been A Big Deal. Heal quickly — too bad you don’t have a hobby that you can enjoy while sedentary 😉
Comment by kmkat — July 31, 2010 @ 7:01 pm
I hope you heal very quickly. And I hope your family is taking over your dishwasher duties. Obviously it’s not safe for YOU to do it. 😉
Comment by Pam — July 31, 2010 @ 7:03 pm
omg, Suzie. I am so so sorry. Thank goodness your Achilles wasn’t cut. I hope you heal quickly, sweetie.
Comment by Shelley — July 31, 2010 @ 7:54 pm
Best wishes for a speedy recovery! The silver lining, I suppose, is that you can knit while you convalesce.
Comment by jess — July 31, 2010 @ 7:58 pm
Good heavens! That’s reason enough to hand over that chore to someone else in the family.
I, too, like the idea of convalesence yarn. I really think you deserve it. Especially given the severity of the cut. You were at deaths door, after all. (Hey. Milk it for all it’s worth and more.)
Comment by 2muchfun — July 31, 2010 @ 8:54 pm
I see that you are doing your job as a mother quite well, going out of your way to ruin her life. But did you have to do it in such a dramatic and dangerous way? Take care of your sore leg and get as much knitting done as you can while you convalesce.

It probably would have been months off your feet if you had cut that tendon! I’ve been nursemaid to someone who had surgery on that tendon — it was very heavy on the maid activities and very much not life-enabling for the caretaker so I hope your daughter will count herself lucky..
Comment by GinkgoKnits — August 1, 2010 @ 3:45 am
Ooooh – that sounds horrible. Take care of yourself!!!

I always knew that housework was bad for your health – here’s the proof…
heal quickly (well, not too quickly – you do want to milk the situation some…)
Comment by Deirdre — August 1, 2010 @ 6:19 am
Even more reason to assign the chores to others. So glad your tendon made it through intact. Take care!
Comment by Orinda5 — August 1, 2010 @ 8:43 am
Your very existence is reason enough for any teen child to bemoan her/his own! I’m sure you just did it to get attention. 😉 But seriously, convalesence yarn is a must. Surely you don’t have enough stash to last you through your healing process?!

Oh man! That is one freaky accident. My husband calls me Calamity Lou for my ability to have those type of accidents. I’m showing him this. I do hope you heal up and get lots of convalescence yarn.
Comment by Mary Lou — August 1, 2010 @ 9:10 am
I think I should sit and knit all day in a gesture of sympathy.
Comment by Kim — August 1, 2010 @ 12:08 pm
I’m so sorry to hear you are injured. I certainly hope that no blood got on any of Jena’s things.
Good luck with the healing. The second and third days can be worse than the first, so take it easy for a bit.
Comment by twinsetellen — August 1, 2010 @ 2:43 pm
Ack!!! Heal quickly, dear Susan! Sending hugs….
Comment by Romi — August 1, 2010 @ 7:39 pm
Oh dear I am SOOOOO sorry this has happened. Put your feet up and knit. Get better soon.
Comment by Claudine — August 1, 2010 @ 8:12 pm
May you heal with speed.
If whatever plan you had for button holes doesn’t work, how about slipping waste yarn in on the band where the button holes ought to be? And then when you are ready to fold, graft the live stitches together.(This is not my idea. Learned in a workshop on a completely different subject. This came up in casual conversation)
Comment by Needles — August 2, 2010 @ 8:01 am
Sending healing thoughts your way! Take care of yourself. 🙂 (Oh, and I’m busy this summer. . . ruining my son’s life. Apparently, I’m really good at it!)
Comment by Kym — August 2, 2010 @ 9:03 am
And when I read that, I almost passed out. (swoon…)
Comment by sue — August 2, 2010 @ 1:47 pm
Ouch! That description turned my stomach – can’t imagine *seeing* it! Sounds like a good reason to put your feet up and knit. Hope you are better soon!
Comment by Amy — August 2, 2010 @ 3:10 pm
Hmm, a V-shaped cut….which will resemble a knit stitch as a scar…
Comment by Pinecone — August 3, 2010 @ 2:25 pm
Eek! You’re so lucky you didn’t slice the tendon — it’s bad enough that you cut it deeply enough to see it! Take it easy and get better (more time to knit).
Comment by janna — August 3, 2010 @ 10:12 pm
the good news is that daughters grow out of that “you’re ruining my life!” phase. My daughter is now 34 and we are good friends, and can laugh about mothers’ role of embarrassing daughters.
Heal quickly!
