From Sally — It’s Not ALL Gloves

Filed under: Rhodocrosite — surly @ 1:18 pm

Finally, a post about something other than gloves!  (Come on, we know that’s what you’re thinking.)

Sadly, most of our knitting lately has been gloves.  Nothing but gloves.  Even we’re getting tired of knitting and thinking about them.  My other knitting has languished, forlorn and abandoned, in various corners of the house.  I want to work on them, but my time has been limited.

One of these projects is a stole designed by Norah Gaughan called Rhodocrosite. Actual rhodocrosite — the mineral — is a rosy pink in color. If I had known that when I decided to knit this stole, I would probably have raided my vast stash of pink and red yarns. Rosy pink is one of my absolute favorite colors.

Instead, I decided to make it out of a yarn called Rimu. I have (I hope) just enough for the stole; I originally bought the yarn for an oversized scarf. Rimu, which comes from New Zealand, is a blend of Merino (60%) and Possum (40%). Yes. That was Possum. I’m using the Kiwicrush colorway. The yarn is very soft, and is supposed to get a nice halo when washed/wet blocked. We’ll see. First I have to finish it (which means finishing yet more gloves. But that’s enough about gloves for now).

Here is the obligatory in progress shot of my Rhodocrosite stole. It looks rather wavy and “unkempt” — the faggoting really needs to be blocked to look nice.

  1. Thank you for showing a shot of an unblocked Rhodocrosite. As a non-experienced lace knitter I was totally daunted by that view of the finished shawl on the Berocco website. To me this is a real case of one picture being worth a thousand words. Maybe I’ll be able to tackle lace one day.

  2. My son is currently dating a lovely young woman whose parents are from New Zealand. They still have a home and family there. Last year for Christmas “girlfriend” gave me a lovely pair of gloves that I thought must have been made from cashmere, they were so soft. She encouraged me immediately to check the label, and to my surprise I found they were made from about 60% possum!! I LOVE them. I love your stole. It is a lovely pattern, and you do exquisite work.

  3. What a surprise to see your rhodocrosite! I am now making my second. Mine was GORGEOUS when finally blocked! I made it out of Cascade Heritage in “fuschia.” My Brazilian/Japanese DIL loved, loved it – so what’s a motha to do.?! I gifted it, of course, for her birthday! The second is now on the needles and it is out of Madelinetosh Merino Light, Vermillion. I think I love it even more than the first! It’s so affirming to see it on another’s needles and unblocked. I know of only one other person, Beth, in our Penelope Knitters group, who is making one but I believe hers is languishing right now. Your green Rimu is lovely! Is “faggoting” what the lace part is called? If not, what is faggoting? Happy knitting, Sally! Hope to see you in Mpls. some time soon!

  4. Hey, I’m looking forward to more gloves! Your patterns plus your Guide have totally smoothed the way for me to make more gloves than this Californian will ever need. I’ll be wearing them just because they look terrific.

  5. You may have lost me on “possum.” (That is really a beautiful design.)

  7. I love Rimu and bought a bunch when in NZ last year. Believe it or not, I may have few balls of the kiwicrush. If you run short, let me know and I’ll check.
