It is that time of year again — The Birkebeiner Ski Race!! We head up every year and stay at the No-Tell Motel, so John can ski 30 miles in 3 hours. Whew! I’m already exhausted! 😉

I am bringing along my new copy of Principles of Knitting:

POK

I have not even cracked it open yet…I am savoring the moment and will open it when the time is right. Or when I am bored to death in the car. Whichever comes first!

I am also bringing some knitting, though I am experiencing increasing pain in my right wrist. I have been wearing an immobilizer, and it doesn’t seem to aggravate it too much to knit, but the pain is worsening. Red flag! Stop knitting! It is very hard to listen to those voices in my head.

I will reveal the project when I get a little bit more done. I am over the top in love with the yarn, and the pattern is suited, but “out there.” It will certainly be an eye popper, but perhaps not in a good way. It may be a poor marriage of yarn and design, but whatever. It’s only knitting!!

  1. Please, please heed the warnings your wrist is sending you! I have had surgery on my right wrist and was facing the same on my left due to knitting too much. Luckily, I found lever knitting (on Rav and Youtube), and it has saved me from another surgery. Good luck!

  2. I have had wrist and thumb pain recently also and have cut back on knitting sessions. BUT, I was knitting a shawlette and was having problems with the slippery yarn, so I switched needles to a new circ I had just purchased to try. The cubic wood needle from Webs. They are square needles with a VERY NICE cable. Well, 3 hours later, I was still knitting and had no pain at all. The needle doesn’t roll around in your hand and it worked for me. I ordered a few more sizes, but many are backordered. Try one set and see if it works for you.

  3. Don’t know what the new version’s like, but I’ve had the old one for 20 years… it’s taught me a lot and is an invaluable reference on techniques!

  4. Do the square needles mess with your gauge?

  5. Wrist pain is awful, and mine seems to come and go without reason or warning. You will enjoy the book! And finally, have you knit John the Osterdalen sweater to wear in the event?

  6. Good luck to John, and good luck to you on the wrist pain.

  7. Enjoy! I love my OLD copy of the Principles. I never really tried reading it cover to cover, so I am constantly surprised by the nuggets that I find whenever I decide to look something up.

  8. The square needles do not seem to affect my gauge. I even switched projects in the middle when I freed up the pair I had after finishing the shawlette and put the front of a sweater on the needles. Everything seems the same, except my wrists and thumb don’t hurt. The blocking will take care of any changes, if there are any.
