Sorry to step on your post, Surly, but I have a new project to introduce and a great pattern. I can’t wait to see the picture of your Mermaid tomorrow!
First, though, I want to thank all of you for your wonderful comments about the Peacock Shawl. I felt very warmed by your generous and thoughtful praise.
Back to the present!! My next small project is the Diamond Fantasy Shawl/Scarf by Sivia Harding. Many of you are familiar with this pattern, but it is fairly new to me. I was looking for something for some handpainted silk that Sally generously willed to me from her stash (and I did offer it back to her when she was here — honest!!).
The yarn is 100% handpainted silk in teal and lavendar/purple; approx. yardage is 450 yds.; worsted to heavy DK in weight. I am using a US 10 needle. The pattern calls for fingering weight yarn, but says sport will also work. Sivia thought the heavier silk would work fine — perhaps yielding a medium sized shawl. I love the yarn and the pattern. I like the fact that the edging is built in as you go. This pattern reminds me of the Hemp for Knitting Ponchette I made last year, but a little dressier.
Sivia does not follow pattern writing convention completely — i.e, her charts are kind of different, but you can certainly figure it out. She includes written and charted versions.
I was supposed to be working on Kauni, but knitting is my hobby and I do it for fun — and this seemed more fun at the moment!
Susan — I really enjoyed knitting the Diamond Fantasy Shawl — and I used a lace weight hand-dyed silk — I still haven’t blocked it, but I’ve worn it often! And it was WONDERFUL fun to knit!

From Susan — I know this would be so pretty and delicate in lighter weight yarn — I may need to make it again!

Love that shawl! I’ve made three of them.
Now I have to get to work on Peacock, eh?!

I must be the only one who hasn’t knitted that shawl! It’s gorgeous!

I have that pattern and started knitting it in a heathered yarn but I ripped because I thought it would look better in a hand painted silk!
Great minds think alike.

I love that pattern – I have drooled over it many times but have not purchased it. I
am like you in that I am not sure why I would make a shawl for myself…my mom makes and
wears them all the time. Maybe later this summer…

Gorgeous! I love that yarn and it’s working out really well in that pattern. It’s a great pattern – I really need to make one of those myself!

Beautiful! I love the color combination of that yarn — similar to my Waving Lace socks, which I have now finished and need to post.

You are turning into a shawl knitting machine! It’s looking beautiful in the silk!

Oh, it so beautiful. I am working on a DFS in fingering, but knitting it in a heavier weight is perfect to get a nice-sized shawl. I found the writing of the pattern a bit different too but as I’ve only knitted two shawls, I thought it was just my novice lace-knitting skills. I’m glad to know I wasn’t the only one. I felt more comfortable following the written instructions, but knitting it in fingering weight means it goes on forever, but I am enjoying mine too. I think I shall have to work on it again soon.

Wow! I love those colors and the silk looks so lustrous! I especially like the fact that the edge is “knit as you go.”

Susan- Love the yarn, love the pattern.
I’m intrigued by the way the edging is knitted on- that’s a great idea.
Loving the color too!

“knitting is my hobby and I do it for fun” maybe I should start repeating this regularly!!! The shawl is gorgeous – that yarn has such a beautiful polish – I can only imagine what it looks like in person.
