From Susan — Throw Me a Line, Please

Michelle commented — yes, the same bountiful Michelle as recently described — about using a lifeline for the Mystery Shawl.  [Aside] — I do believe that Sally and I are the only two knit-bloggers in the universe not making the Mystery Shawl [end aside].  She made a mistake and had to rip back to her lifeline.

While I was knitting the Peacock Shawl, I got teased about using a lifeline in knitting — like it was the same thing as training wheels on a bike — for knitting nerds 😉 !  But I like to think of a lifeline the same way I think of using stitch markers, or any other knitting aid: as something that eliminates extra and unnecessary effort.  Could you do a lace pattern without stitch markers?  Sure, but why go through the mental exercise?  I rarely needed my lifeline, but it was nice to know it was there, and the effort (less than 5″) seemed well worth it.  I’m glad it was helpful to Michelle.

  1. Add me to the list of someone who is not doing the Mystery shawl and has never done a Mystery shawl! A Mystery Fair Isle, I might consider as long as there is no or very little “purple” 😉

  2. Hello,
I am from Germany and I love all your knitting.
I am looking for the pattern for the market squares bag and also for the pattern for the felted clogs.
    Can you help me?
I think in America you have knitting shops and magazines as in Germany. All our yarn shops closed and I can only find
    looking through internet nice pattern.
I also read the Interweave knitting and the Rowan magazine.
At the moment I started with the mystery 3 stole and a Fair Isle pullover for my husband.
Do you knit the sleeves on a Fair Isle pullover from the armhole to the wrist or do you knit the sleeves alone and
when you finish them do you sew them into the armholes?
    Thank you for an answer.
I did not find any email address from you.

  3. What’s wrong with training wheels?

Sure beats ripping back miles of lace, that’s for sure.

  4. Oh man. I am an uber dork. That’s Mistress Dork to you. *snort*

I am a knit blogger not making the mystery stole, and I have never made one, nor am I curious. I don’t like knitting with beads either.

I never use a lifeline. Hate ’em, they slow me down.

I generally use makers only for the the first repeat, and there after, for the beginning of the round. I like to read my knitting. I like to puzzle out the pattern and figure out the logic of what comes next. It’s like music or math to me that way.

    Yeah. Dork.

  5. No Mystery Stole here either. I also use a lifeline in lace. I’ve ripped some items back so many times that the yarn starts to look like mohair, but really isn’t. Usually after I get the rhythm of the pattern moving, I space them out with more rows between. Really don’t want to knit the same item several times over, just to get one finished project, but that’s what would happen without a lifeline.

  6. I’ve discovered it’s a good idea to use a lifeline in any sizeable project! I mean, why not?
