From Susan — Summer Wanes

This weekend and this date sure are harbingers of summer’s passing.  Bummer!  Last chance for summer activities before the first fall cold snap hits.

I am working on a very satisfying project which will be revealed if when it gets finished, but I also knit this little item at the request of my daughter (for a friend of a friend).

It is my One Day Baby Hat knit out of leftover Venezia Sport.  I have a feeling that I will making a LOT of small projects out of my leftovers!

In the original, you can see that the Malizia floral yarn  worked out so the little flower thingies popped out perfectly at the top and bottom of the lace motifs:

In the newest rendition, the lace motifs are smaller (smaller gauge yarn) so the flower thingies don’t line up in the same way.  Whatever!  I think it looks fine and I am not going to do anything to “fix” it!

If I cared, which I don’t, I would enlarge the lace pattern for smaller gauge yarn and use a 10-stitch motif instead of 8.  The other thing I did is make the hat too long by probably a half inch.  Oh well.

The reason that I made this for my “non-knitworthy” daughter is that she actually went to the state fair and found my knitting, dragging her friends along for the ride!  Many, many points were accrued!  Wow.

  1. This is exactly what I needed to make a quick cap for a baby shower next week. Thanks for such a neat pattern!

  2. I have a non-knitworthy daughter too, but she is evolving and now I knit her socks which she appreciates. My granddaughter will never be knit-worthy I fear.

  3. No matter the gauge, this is such a sweet hat for a baby girl. I knit one about a year ago and the mom just loved it!
    Thanks for sharing the pattern.

  4. The new hat is lovely – and it actually (at least from my view of the photo) looks like the bottom portion is the flowery and the color is the surrounding ‘greenery’! Anyway, it looks great just as it is, and the floral yarn still adds a great touch.

  5. Wow – congratulations on a sweet hat but especially on the daughterly interest in the state fair knitting!

  8. I love that hat. My husband frequently requests baby hats for the waitresses where he has coffee every day and that hat is a big hit whith them. Tom loves to be able to bring a gift for the mother to be and try’s to give me advance warning of the event and gender of the baby.

  9. That is the most charming baby hat EVER. So sweet! Next time I need a gift for a sweet baby girl, it’s gonna be THAT hat!

  10. I knit one of your hats for the store I used to work at. You cannot believe how many people were entranced with the idea and the yarn. I hope tons have downloaded your pattern, but I also suspect that they saw the yarn in a new way. I know I did.

And with a new grandbaby imminent, I’m thinking about doing the same at the bottom of a sweater. Now if you were to do up a pattern with the motif for Malizia…. If not, I’ll just knit one and be happy you thought it up.

  11. I would appreciate it if you could tell me how to find the Bernat Satin Solid yarn that is listed on your pattern. When I went onto the Bernat site, I could not find it anywhere. Thanks so much.
