From Susan — Mini Modular

Today I spent a grueling afternoon at the Mall of America — I know that many people travel from all corners of the world to shop there, but why?  It is NOT my favorite hang out, and I just may never go there again.  At least I can hope.

I did start a little take-along project.  I am reknitting the Modular Tote by Theresa Gaffey into a smaller purse version.  As I was knitting the regular tote I kept thinking that it would make a great purse.

I’ll be teaching the standard Modular Tote as a class at Amazing Threads and also offered up the purse as an option — I thought maybe I should knit one myself before “teaching” others how to do it ;)!!

I had a very specific idea for the colors but could not find them, so I settled on these in Nature Spun 100% Wool Worsted (from left to right): Plum Line (#015), Limestone (#010), Hurricane (#001).  The class starts in September so I thought I better do my homework!

I have been very lax on my Kauni 🙁 .  It is not fun knitting the sleeves so I have been avoiding them like the Sleeve Plague of 1752.  Hmmmm, the Kauni Vest———??   I like the sound of that ———> N-a-a-a-a-h-h-h-h-h-h!   As I have often said to other knitters: this is a hobby, it is supposed to be fun — not like taking your medicine (OR doing homework), so pick up a project you LOVE!  But, I want to wear the Kauni and it will be more wearable with sleeves, so I will work on it again soon.

Enjoy your Monday!

  1. Love those three colors together. I’m rather a cool shades person. Can’t wait to see how the purse comes along.

  2. Here’s a question for Sally –
I remember that you’re a bicyclist. We’re planning a four week ride in November (our off season from farming) and I don’t think I can go four weeks without knitting. My current plan is to take a pair of socks in my pannier – for the evenings, of course. Have you done an extended ride, and if so, did you take along pointy sticks?

  3. Susan, I will definitely want to see your Modular Purse on Thursday, and I’m sure Lisa will, too!

  4. By which I mean, I should have said, your purse-in-progress or finished, wherever you are with it. I am also a fan of the cool colors, like Denise.

  5. From Susan to Auntie Ann and Lisa – I have not forgotten that you will be at Panera’s on Thursday and I am really looking forward to meeting you both in person.  And I will definitely bring the purse-in-progress, and it will definitely NOT be done!!  It is smaller but I think it will be as much knitting because of the flap.

  6. My favourite colour combination! Adore the Limestone and Hurricane.

What? No sleeves? Is this like some self-fulfilling prophecy? You and Lorraine were supposed to set the pace!

  7. Susan- When you’re ready, we’ll have the Pina Colada’s made for you.
Because alcohol sure does help on Sleeve Island. It’s practically mandatory.
I seem to be a permanent resident.

Love the color combos- Nature Spun was made for felting.

  8. Denise: I haven’t done that kind of a long ride, but I can’t imagine why you couldn’t take knitting along like that. In fact, I’d insist on it!

  9. I just got out of NOT going to the Mall of America. A friend of mine wanted to go to a scrapbooking thing there. I am not a scrapbook kind of girl and I didn’t want to go to MOA. I feel like I dodged a bullet. 🙂

  10. Great colors for the purse. And I too avoid the MOA like the plague.

  11. I like that color combo! Kauni’s day come, soon I’m sure 🙂 We also have “super” mall that folks flock from all over to go to. I am not a mall girl. Unless it’s small and quaint and unhustled. Do. Not. Like. Large. Crowded. Malls.

  12. I used to live 45 minutes from the ‘big mall’ and never really got it either. Yeah, it was fun to see once, but to travel cross country or further just to see it? Not a chance. Wonder if people wonder why they came so far for a mall.

Not familiar with the project you are knitting so I look forward to more pics as you progress.

  13. Lovely color combination! Can’t wait to see how it turns out.

I just bought the yarn for Kauni but haven’t started yet. This will be my first project using this technique. Do you really have to knit the sleeves down from the armholes or is there a way to knit them separately and then attach them? The attached way seems so bulky and cumbersome.

    Thanks!

  14. So… If I buy the pattern and pay you… will you do an online class for the modular purse???
Uh oh… I think I’m trying to corral you in to teaching on line. You could do it in Yahoo groups. Only allowing the people who pay you entry into the group. Do you have a PayPal account??? Rut Ro

  15. I went to the Amazing Threads website, can you tell me what pattern was used to make that pink purse/bag on the left hand side of the homepage??? Thanks

  16. Hi…Love the Rogue Hoodie. Did you design it…or can the pattern be purchased? Also love this modular purse. I’ve finished 4 felted purses but haven’t tried stripes. Will try now!
