From Sally — The Yarn Harlot

Filed under: Tangled Yoke — surly @ 10:17 am

Last night was Back-to-School night at my son’s high school. Yesterday morning, one of our regular readers — Wendy O — mentioned to me that Stephanie Pearl-McPhee (The Yarn Harlot) was coming to town. Say what? How did I not know that? I implored my husband to attend Back-to-School night in my stead (after just returning from a month in Italy bicycling he had no good excuse to say no), and then off I went. (Sadly, Wendy could not go. Thursday was apparently THE night to traipse back to school in the Washington, DC area.)

It was a really fun evening. Stephanie was both funny and thought provoking and it was great to spend time with so many knitters. Now that I no longer work in a yarn store, I don’t see all that many knitters in person; it was a nice little treat. I saw former favorite customers , old friends, met some new people, and briefly felt like a rock star when regular reader Lee from Baltimore found out who I was and got very excited. (Waves to all who were there.)

Stephanie kindly recognized the name of our blog and remembered meeting Susan (or at least meeting her Bohus) last April. Here are a few bad photos.

As an extra bonus, I actually made progress on my Tangled Yoke sleeve — all in all a wonderful evening.

PS from Susan: I just found out that the “Learn to Knit Kit” gift basket fetched $160 for the United Way — woo hoo!  🙂

  3. Enjoyed the pictures, I saw Stephanie last month near Boston, she was everything I imagined, and so very funny!  New sweater looks beautiful! You look very pretty in your picture, it’s nice to put a face to the name!

  4. Thanks for posting the photo — I love to see knitbloggers real faces. I met Susan at Yarnover last April, and I see the sisterly resemblance. Two beautiful masterly knitterly sisters, that’s you guys!!

  5. Aha, I recognize the shawl. Bet it got lots of raves. Wish I had known about it — I would have been there, too.

  6. Sally- So, ah, when will you and Susan be on tour? Make sure
    you stop in Toronto.

Can I be your Agent in Canada?

  7. Sally! I rearranged my life so I could go, and then could not find that Borders to save my life. I did find Barnes and Noble though. Needless to say, I was a tad upset and I won’t admit to how long I drove around that crazy part of Virginia.

(I guess you can take the girl out of the suburbs, but you can’t send her that close to the city.)

and, well, my Google map was a work of pure fiction!

Glad you had fun, and I’m truly happy I mentioned it elsewhere so you knew to go.

To make it up to myself, I’ve signed up for a knitting class at Jenny Beyer’s Studio (she’s mostly a quilter) — Knitted Pendant bag — with seed beads and perle cotton — probably on 000’s! I’m trying to be good to myself for a change.

Thanks for the report on the Yarn Harlot, she’s so clever.

Oh yes, and the color of that sweater is just so wonderful. (Sorry for the book.)

  8. Hi,

I am still excited that I got to meet you!! I went and got the yarn to start my hemlock today, and I am on round 31. I do not want to put it down. I am enjoying it so much, and feel happy that thus far I have not had any problems understanding or executing the pattern. I am planning to go to a CSM (circular sock machine) event October 20th to gain some practical knowledge.

If you would like to email me, I can then send you my photo of you with Stephanie, I think it came out pretty good, even though Daniel’s arm is slightly in one corner, that can be cropped!

And Susan, congrats on the raising of funds for United Way!!

  9. Wow, how cool! Meeting Stephanie and her meeting you! It all makes sense now, that you used to work in a yarn store, my idea of a very fun job. Alas, I probably would have no money, giving whatever they could afford to pay right back. It was great to see Borders hosting the event, as I work for the Borders Corp. I’m glad to hear that you have a teenaged son, so do I. I’m relatively new to your blog and wanted to believe that you had no children and all of your time is your own and that’s how you manage to accomplish so much. But, surprise, surprise.

  15. The shawl you are wearing is beautiful! I love look of the collar. Can you please share what pattern and yarn you used? I could not find another way to email you from your blog page. Thanks for the help.
