From Susan — Hey, Don’t Blame Me!!

It was brought to my attention that the Hemlock Ring Pattern has a mistake — the mistake was in the original pattern written in 1942.  And I know this for a fact because Diane brought a vintage pattern book to knitting group and the pattern was there, mistake and all.  When I knitted my Hemlocks, I must have just fixed it as I went along and did not pay much attention.

Round 35 (original):
35th rnd: O, k 1, O, * sl 1, k 2 tog, psso, O, k 4, O, sl 1, k 2 tog, psso, (O, k 1) twice; sl 1, k 2 tog, psso, (k 1, O) twice. Repeat from * around.

Round 35 (revised):
35th rnd: * O, k 1, O, sl 1, k 2 tog, psso, O, k 4, O, sl 1, k 2 tog, psso, (O, k 1) twice; sl 1, k 2 tog, psso, k 1. Repeat from * around.

I revised the Hemlock pdf that is linked in the Free Patterns section of our blog.  I’m sorry if any of you had problems with the pattern!!

As far as my other knitting is concerned, I am done with the back and both fronts of the Lopi Cardigan.  I’ll start the sleeves and may even finish them this weekend.  I can see why people like knitting with BIG, FAT Yarn!!

  2. Like you, I never noticed. I guess I read just enough of the pattern to see what is going on and then let the knitting guide me.

  3. When you go from a laceweight to anything thicker, it does go fast.

But I still am a fine gauge person- and I’ve become totally obsessed
    with lace-

    2008- the year of lace!

  5. Thank you so much for this post. I thought I was losing my mind of course knitting at 3 AM is not exactly sane…but I digress, makes sense now.

  6. Greetings Women,

What length circular needle would you suggest on the Hemlock project.
I know the size is likely to be 10.5 but what lenth cord did you you have on the circular needled?

    Thanks so much,
    Elizabeth

  7. Adding my thanks for the correction. I didn’t notice it on the first one I made, but have on the second one. I’m so glad to have found your correction. It was driving me crazy.

    Thanks again, Martha

  8. Thanks for the correction. I was getting discouraged reading about all the problems, but now think I will try it. As I compared your doiley directions with the one I printed I see you made changes on row 39 and 43 also. The original ends the repeat with (O, k 1) 3 times. Your correction ends it with (O k 1) 2 times. Just want to be sure that is what you meant and not a typo. Thank you again, Judy

  9. thanks also for the correction… I was having trouble on row 37 (three stitches left over!), and googled hemlock ring blanket and came up with this blog. Thank you!
I’ve worked backwards and fixed it now, but I’m still left with 2 stitches at the end of row 35 now… any advice?

  10. Hi,

I have a find to offer and I need your help!

First, I found another pattern instruction for the hemlock. I have not compared the instructions.

I have been trying over and over to duplicate the “create 9 stitches in the second yo” of row 14 or 15. I searched the internet to try to find a demonstration. Regrettably, no success. My first attempt created something that looked like a chain in crochet. This did not seem right – shoot, I could just create a cast on for the ‘bridge’ of stitches. That is what we are creating, correct? Next, I tried the ‘knit in front and back’ increase concept, 9 times. This seems to resemble the half-moon shapes, but the yarn from the released yarn-over seems to to create a diagonal line that should not be there. So, I must not be incorporating the yarnover in the stitches. Any thoughts, any one?

  11. Hi there! I love the Hemlock Ring Pattern and I came to your site today to download it but the link doesn’t seem to be working. I tried several of your other free patterns and they worked just fine. Any chance I could have you e-mail the pattern to me if it isn’t too much of a problem? I was hoping to knit this as a wedding gift for a friend… Thanks so much for the knitting inspiration!

  12. I have this pattern in an old booklet. I got so far and the rows looked “off” so I thought I did a stitch wrong. I’m not as good at knitting as crochet. So I put it aside till I could ask someone.
