From Susan — Where Did THAT Come From?

I think I must go into a trance sometimes.  The other day the mail arrived and lo and behold, there was a familiar bag from my favorite online yarn supplier, Webs.  Really.  Hmmm.  I did not remember ordering yarn from Webs or anyone else!  Has this ever happened to you??

I had fallen down the Ravelry rabbit hole and saw a project I wanted to make, ordered yarn and none of it registered in my memory bank.  Wow.  Scary stuff!

Once I opened the yarn, it came back to me in a flash!  (Thank goodness…).  I had seen Ojo de Dios from a recent Interweave Knits (Winter 2014) and for some reason wanted to make it.  The yarn used is Plymouth Yarns Gina.  The original colorway (color #5, Sunset) was pretty, but I opted for a darker, richer option (#2).  I finished it in pretty short order – it was fun to knit!  The pattern calls for 6 skeins, but I wish I had bought 7.  When knitting the triangles, I pulled some skeins apart.  The garter stitch area took a lot more yarn than I thought it would so I had to splice yarn in from the destroyed skeins!

I used a cable cast on for the triangles and was very pleased with how the pick up edges look (easier to see in the close up below).  Hard to tell where one triangle ends the other begins.  I pictured doing a provisional cast on for all of the 17 triangles and decided it would be way too much work — good call!

I do have to question my sanity, though.  Of course there is the memory issue, but also have to ask myself, why such an autumnal project when spring is getting ready to burst forth?  The mystery of my inner knitter continues to elude me 🙂 .

PS – another memory lapse surfaced at work today.  Should I worry? 🙁

  1. Last year, during after midnight trolling of yarn related websites, I saw a picture of “Creedence,” a lovely shawlette…the narrow long kind that can double as a scarf…on StevenBe’s website. At 2:00am, I had to have it, so sure I was of it that I printed the pattern that night, and ordered the original yarn used in the pattern, in the color shown (this is something I never do). When the yarn arrived a week later, I truly had no memory of having ordered it, or why, until I saw the pattern on my dresser. (We were living in temporary quarters then, and I had lost my mind). All’s well, etc., however, because it was my most loved , most worn knitted item last year…who wouldn’t have been happier wearing worsted weight 30% cashmere in last years MN winter? Perhaps the truest decisions are made in the after midnight hours!

  2. I do the same thing. In fact, I have 2-gallon ziplock bags that I use to put the pattern and yarn in to make up my own “kits” because by the time I finish one item, I find myself forgetting what the yarn I purchased was purchased for. I think it is because we have so much going on in our lives and also knit more than one thing at a time…at least that is what tell myself! LOL!…

  3. Gorgeous shawl and you will love it this coming autumn! I am about 20 years older than you and this afternoon went to the refrigerator twice from the kitchen counter because I forgot what I had wanted in there within the time of a few footsteps. I think modern life is just getting to us. Too much stimulation and too much stress. Maybe yogurt might help. It seems to be the current cure-all. I remember that I’ve got some in the refrigerator but by the time I send this to you I will have forgotten all about it.

  4. Perhaps ordering yarn online has become one of those neurological reflexes that originate in the spine rather than the brain, like reflexively pulling your hand away from a hot surface. Smile. Never mind. It’s beautiful a beautiful piece and that spinal reflex center made a great yarn choice.

  5. Seems like you could do a second one very quickly in ‘spring’ colors. 🙂

  6. Maybe you’ll forget the shawl too, and then this fall you’ll get a gift from yourself! Kind of a knitterly version of finding cash in a pocket of something you haven’t worn in a long time. Beautifully done.

  7. Oh, my, that is Gorgeous. I bought the magazine specifically for that shawl, and now I *REALLY* have to have one for myself! (after I knit the wedding sweet dreams, and the gazillion other things I’ve promised to knit for fund-raisers)!

Thank you for the inspiration. I think I just drooled on my keyboard!

  8. Lovely shawl. Memory lapses can be caused by many things. Are you getting enough sleep? or have extra concerns on your mind?

My memory improved (but still isn’t perfect) when I started using a CPAP machine for sleep apnea.

  10. Talk about memory lapse! IK Winter 2014. To my credit, it’s before 6am here and I haven’t had my coffee yet. Just wanted you to know. And I still think your shawl is lovely!
