“I’d like Sally to knit me a cream colored scarf for Christmas.” This was the message from my mother-in-law to my husband. She’s 92 years old; her wish was my command. (Even the song says Christmas is for kids from one to 92.)
I rummaged around in my stash and found some cream cashmere I bought at the Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival from Hunt Valley Yarns. Then I looked for a simple but elegant pattern and settled on Dorchester designed by Donna Brooks.
This was a nice, easy pattern that I hope she’ll find wearable. She lives in Minnesota and so she needed a scarf that would be warm; that’s one reason I steered away from something overly lacy or open.
In other news, it’s Susan’s wedding anniversary today. Happy Anniversary!
From Susan — I love that she asked you to knit for her. The scarf is gorgeous and is perfect for her. Soft with just enough pizzazz to look special. And my anniversary is going to be spectacular (kidding!). John has a colonoscopy tomorrow, so is prepping today. Whoopie!!

I kept my Hunt Valley Cashmere for a few years, taking it out and petting it regularly, before finally knitting It into a scarf. Your MIL will love it! So luxurious and a perfect gift!

Yikes! When I looked at the pattern on Ravelry it lists 5 needle sizes!
Anyway, it’s gorgeous and you’re MIL is bound to love it.
I sure hope you didn’t need to use 5 different sized needles to make it.

No — I used one size needle for the whole scarf. I don’t have the pattern in front of me, but I suspect it’s b/c she suggests different sizes and yarn weights.

What a gorgeous gift! And there is something about someone getting on in years asking for something that makes you want to knit. I knit a shawl for a friend’s mother because she never asks her kids for anything, but kept trying to adopt the shawl I knit for my friend. She was so delighted, she thanks me whenever she sees me while in the state visiting.
