From Susan — “It’s not you, it’s me.”

OMG!  It’s true!  We’ve all heard this ‘excuse’ at one time or another — from some “bad boy” that we hoped to lasso and tame against all odds.  But what if the odds were against it from conception?  Hmmm….gives one a little pause, n’est-ce pas?

A recent StarTribune included an article from the Washington Post called, “Gene in Men Linked to Marital Discord.”  A study of 1,000 hetereosexual couples and the presence of a gene variant (called an allele) were linked to marital discord.  Men with one or two copies of the allele were more likely to experience marital discord and divorce — 40% of all men fall into this category.  Men without the allele were more likly to be devoted and loyal.  This is all beyond my scientific capabilities, but I can sure name some men with the ‘bad boy’ gene!!

Presto Chango:
I finished the second “boyish” panel of the Presto Chango.  I think it turned out okay.  The yarn is very nice, but I like yarn that knits like yarn – not string.  It has the hand of soft cotton, which I am not fond of knitting.  But it is nice and soft – and easy care – for a baby.

The cabled panel was taken directly from the Aubrey Cap (from Simply Shetland 2), stitch for stitch.  No thinking involved!

I am now working in earnest on the Aran Wrap and still loving this project.  I will never catch Surly, but then again, I have to knit a lot more! 🙁

  1. Thank you, thank you for the comments about the yarn on the baby sweater. I am using the same yarn for a shawl I am making for a friend who has multiple allergies and I thought the nylon/acrylic blend might work … but it does, indeed, knit like string and while soft it is almost too soft for the shawl … just like the soft cotton you describe!

  3. That baby sweater is darling. It’s almost enough to make me want a 6th baby. (NOT!!!) I may need to find some little person to knit it for.

  4. The bad boy allele for men was very interesting. Yes, we have all known a classic bad boy or two – after the first one you usually can spot them and don’t know another one quite as well.

I wonder if there is a drama queen – jealous for no reason allele for women? We all know the type – you expect them to be all bluster and tears in their twenties, it’s unfortunate but common. But some women in their fifties are still all boule versee and imagining that their husbands are having affairs with perfectly innocent women. Sometimes their husbands actually are fooling around, but seldom with the women their wives are having such a good time hating.

The switch-o-matic baby sweater is adorable! Too bad Comfort is unpleasant to knit; I have a chilly apartment and was thinking of knitting a sweater out of it to sleep in and wanted something that would go in the washer and dryer.

  5. My husband thinks that knowing about the gene variant shouldn’t excuse anyone’s behavior – instead it should be like knowing you have a genetic predisposition to high cholesterol and therefore should be extra steadfast in avoiding red meat. Yes, I am a lucky woman (of course, I think he is a lucky man, too).

  8. Absolutely love your knitting…it’s truly in a class of its own! Can you please tell me the source for the Aubrey cap? I searched the internet but to no avail. I want to knit a gift for a baby that’s due later this month, and love the cabled version of Presto with the Aubrey hat.

Thanks so much for your time and assistance. I have the yarn and needles all ready to go!
    Happy knitting,
    Maureen

  9. I feel your pain on having to knit more than your sister. I’m tall with long arms and broad shoulders, big feet, and a giant head. Anything I knit for myself takes forever! And, of course, it all takes a lot more yarn which can be ‘spensive. But, on a positive side, we can pull off those big dramatic patterns.
