From Susan — Still in the Weeds!

The kitchen is progressing, but has a long way to go!!  Most of the boxes have been emptied and items put away.  What you see here is the picture you’ll find under the definition: “round peg, square hole!”  There is a lot of room, but nothing fits.  It was so annoying.

DD came over last night, took one look at the counters, and said she thought they would be ‘a little nicer.’  These are old, cut up doors!  John just put them there so we would have some workable space!  So funny!  The real countertops take weeks to “fabricate.”  The floor comes last.  And the globe lights are soon to be 1970’s history, baby!

I will be spending most of today/tomorrow getting ready for the knitting retreat I am doing at the Norwegian Wood Retreat Center this weekend.  So excited because some of my favorite knitters have signed up!

I am not really doing much knitting yet – hand surgery is still healing.  I CAN knit, but not with impunity!! 🙂

PS to Amy: We are using vinyl plank for the floors – floating floors do not go under the cabinets.

PS2 to Chloe: I grew up with an electric stove…got my first experience with a gas range in an apartment.  I could never go back!

  1. I’m sorry that you’re still in healing mode. I get a bit cranky if I don’t get enough knitting time! I’m really looking forward to seeing what you do with the kitchen. We’re in building mode ourselves & I’m up for some good ideas.

  2. The cabinets look lovely. I am a bit surprised that the flooring comes last – seems like if you’re gutting the kitchen, you would replace the flooring first so you’re not moving appliances, etc. a second time, and that the flooring would extend underneath the cabinets…. Good thinking (and actually looks like a nicely done job!) to use the cut doors as workspace while you’re waiting for your countertops! Looking forward to seeing the completed kitchen.

  3. Cabinets look really lovely. What I noticed more, though, is what appears to be a GAS stove. I grew up with gas but am now forced into electric. The food is just not the same. Hope your hand heals for your Retreat! Would love to be there. The only way I would ever attempt a Fair Isle Christmas ornament, although I really want one. Too much of an “old dog” :-).

  4. The hinges are such a nice touch on the counters!

We have a round globe light up north in our cabin!

  6. Hahaha, I looked at the picture before I read the post. I was wondering why your counters had hardware on the side and was debating the merits of this new style. Silly me. Good thing I am alone with no one hearing me mulling out loud.

  7. DD’s comment cracked me up! Great idea to use the doors as work areas! I know the retreat will go swimmingly well! Sounds like such a lovely place! You could have the song “Norwegian Wood” playing softly in the background to enhance the ambience! We missed you yesterday at knitting but knew you were prepping for this weekend. John will probably be working on the kitchen more whilst you are away. Will be exciting to see the next steps! The cabinets look gorgeous! Can’t believe what a difference they make! Enjoy!

  8. I looked at the picture and wondered what happened to the sink. Then I read the post and laughed at myself. At least you can escape to knitting seemed and relax. Looking forward to progress pictures.

  9. wow! That’s coming along fast! I’m sure it doesn’t feel that way to you at the moment, but it’s lovely and soon you’ll forget all about your ‘before’ kitchen.

  10. How’s the kitchen coming along? Counters installed yet? It looks like it’s going to be great when it’s done. Julie
