From Susan — Sometimes You CAN Go Back

April 29, 2017, I wrote the following as part of a longer post.

As you all know, I sew as well as knit.  My sewing days don’t exactly predate my knitting days, but I did a lot more sewing early in my life.  I bought some fabric a while back because it reminded me of a picture of me from kindergarten, which of course I cannot find.  It also reminds me of a beautiful dress that my grandmother made for my mom.

In the process of packing, I found the picture!  Here is that five-year old girl.

I feel like that little girl a bit when I wear this shirt!!

  2. So cute! Good luck with the packing, we are also in the throes. I’m looking forward to once more having more than 4-5 hours of sleep a night.

  3. Isn’t it amazing . . . the PULL of fabrics we loved when we were children? I cannot look away from gingham in any form. And it was all because of a dress my mom sewed for me when I was 5. XO

  5. I would have loved that print dress when I was 5. When I started buying my own clothes it took me years to wear blue because it seemed that every dress that I had as a child was in aqua, turquoise, navy or powder blue.. When I was finally willing to try on something in blue again I realized, “Hey, I look good in blue.” Guess sometimes the adults got it right when we were kids.

  6. I have sewn dozens of garments when I was younger but never truly enjoyed it. Most of the patterns would be simple enough to complete in a weekend (Very Easy Very Vogue I love you.). So when I see your beautiful, masterfully done shirt with all the painstaking details (the perfectly pointed collar! the cuffs! the button placket! the artfully worked out print arrangement! the back pleat!) while highly aware of the skill and work it required – it gives me the heebee-jeebees. It’s not all the work in itself that bothers me, it’s the being tied to a machine. That’s why I like knitting. You can take it with you anywhere. Of course, OF COURSE, that doesn’t mean I don’t love to see EVERYTHING you have sewn, Susan. Please, please bring it on!
