From Susan — The Ripple Effect

I guess you could say I like things that create waves!  Bad pun.  Here is my latest (and very small calibre) FO.  It is the “Ripple Me This” felted bag from Knitters Fall 2008.   There has not been much in Knitters lately (like the last 10 years 🙁 ) that has inspired me to pick up the needles, but I thought this bag was kind of cute.  I made this one for a class sample and used stash (aka leftover) yarn:

Nature Spun Worsted in Hurricane Seas and Limestone (2 skeins each)

The bag switches colors:

In the above picture, the two sides are shown sewn together before felting.  It is amazing how much knitting it takes to make even a small bag.  I’ve been working on it for the past week.

And during blocking:

It is a fun little project and it is a nice shape for a tote, so I would give it a thumbs up for stash busting and gifting.  I still need to actually sew the handles on so technically it isn’t quite done, but I will call it a [nearly] FO and close enough.

Are all of you ready for Thanksgiving?  I love Thanksgiving because all I do is drive one hour and fifteen minutes each way and then eat, eat, eat.   My beloved FIL still does the cooking even though he is 86 years old.  I love him dearly.  Wishing the best of holidays to you and yours!!

PS to Ellen, and others:  The cleaning is the worst!  However, it’s better than when my husband and I were “newly weds” (1st 5-6 years) when we would be running around so much at the last minute that 9 times out of ten he opened the door with a towel wrapped around his waist — I am not kidding!  And, we were often so late for weddings that half the time we walked in with the bride and her father, with people muttering, who the hell are those two?

Ironically, I just received an issue of Knitters yesterday — I thought my subscription had lapsed, so when it arrived I was surprised, but I also felt a small pang of guilt since I have every single issue.  Maybe this was a sign.  So, I thought, I’ll give it one more chance.  If this issue has anything good, I’ll renew.                                       Sorry — no go 🙁 .

  5. Love the colors! They are totally something I would do. Its good to hear someone else say there has not been much in Knitters that they would want to knit. At one time I thought about giving my subscription up. The new issue is too terribly bad.

  6. Great Bag!. I too have been less than impressed by Knitters and have begun looking for other magazines to fill the void. I’m not sure what it is – I haven’t knit anything out of Vogue Knitting in a very long time but I buy every issue for inspiration. For some reason, I don’t feel the same way about Knitters.

  10. Susan- I think you’re being generous, because I haven’t seen anything in Knitter’s for longer than that. I wonder why they still publish it.

Love the bag, and your color choices. Have a wonderful thanksgiving, bless your FIL’s heart.

  12. Very cute.

Count me among those disappointed by Knitters. They tend to publish stodgy looking designs and too many sweaters in shades of orange, brown, and green — often at the same time. (I have nothing against any of those colors, but there is something about the shades they choose and the way they combine them.)

  14. I actually let my Knitters subscription lapse recently.

Happy Thanksgiving. I won’t be driving at all, but I will be doing most of the cooking. I love that, but I’m a little worried about the “getting the house cleaned up” part that should come prior to the guests arriving.

  15. That bag is adorable. I want to take the class! My felting experiences have been doomed. Maybe, with you as my teacher, I can get it right!

  16. Every once in a while there is one pattern in Knitters that appeals to me. The Mexicali Baby Ole was one, and Cracked Ice from Spring 2005 was another, and Jane Sowerby’s lace patterns are good. Otherwise, the patterns are, um, to put it politely, craptastic. 🙂

Clearly they must appeal to some demographic because they are very much in business! I do think that the future belongs to online knitting mags though.

  17. I adore this bag. I haven’t subscribed because there usually isn’t anything worth knitting. Your bag is CUTE CUTE CUTE. I will try to find a back issue for sale. Did you change the handles from the pattern? Also is one side a different color or did I misunderstand? It’s interesting and different. Thanks for your wonderful blog. I can’t wait to read it.
