From Susan and Sally — Happy Thanksgiving!!

Filed under: Back Story — Both Sisters @ 10:51 am

Even in these troubled times, we have much to be thankful for.  Please enjoy this day with family and friends.  And, please, even if you HATE IT, please oh please, go shopping tomorrow!  Neither of us enjoys shopping on Black Friday, but by venturing out tomorrow, you will help turn the tide of the economic slump by showing confidence in the future.

PS to Deepa: You struck a chord with “craptastic!”  We love the whole “-tastic” thing and crack ourselves up with new words.

  1. Merry Thanksgiving to you too. I will be out shopping tomorrow but I don’t think I will solve the economic slump because all I was going to get was the $.99 poinsetia at Home Depot. Who am I kidding, I can’t walk into a store and only buy one thing. No need to worry about the economy of the nation with me on the loose.

  2. Happy Thanksgiving. I have to respectfully say that I think the idea of buying stuff to fix something is not particularly sound or economically or environmentally responsible. There are an incredible number of issues within that of buying and selling material items, and just to have millions of people buying stuff is not necessarily going to solve the economic crisis.

  4. From Susan — I agree and disagree with The Lady. I’m not talking about buying massive amounts of junk just to buy it. What I am saying, is that by being fearful and not spending anything, we create a self perpetuating cycle. I will buy my kids some stuff for Christmas — not as much as I have in the past, but certainly a few things. I think everyone is looking at their spending a little differently — will I have a job next month? But unless the economy loosens up a little, a lot of people will not have jobs, and it will take a while for the economy to redirect resources to new lines of work.

So, off I go to spend my few paltry dollars on some books for lil daughter and CDs that I am making for my friends for Christmas this year! Woo Hoo!!!

PS — I just got back from my short shopping spree. It did not bode well — very few shopping peeps!

PS2 — went out again and had to stand in a long line — YAY! The peeps were out in force, at least in certain places. There are bargains to be had and people were looking for them.

  5. Susan and Sally – that is one beautiful virtual turkey you roasted! I hope your Thanksgiving was wonderful.

On the shopping – I also agree and disagree with The Lady. I think the key is to buy what you need, buy high quality, buy to match your values (i.e. hand spun yarn from fleeces sheared off humanely raised animals vs. much more inexpensive but unknown origin yarn from overseas).

And, wouldn’t it be a wonderful thing if instead of buying crap we were willing to use that money to buy better infrastructure (light rail!), health care for all, better schools, futures for our nation’s kids, support for those folks who used to have jobs selling crap. That is buying I can get behind!
