From Susan — What’s in a Name?

Buggiflooer.  That is the name of the new Shetland Wool Week Hat pattern.  Wow!  That is an interesting name.  Apparently it is the old Shetland word for sea campion.

Sea Campion

Every year they come out with a new hat pattern, this year’s design is by Alison Rendall.  Usually the pattern starts out as a freebie, but this year they are charging £1.  I gladly paid for this gorgeous design!  I have made their hats for the past several years…it’s a tradition!  My goal is to knit it within the first day, but this took two.  I used six colours of fingering weight yarn — mostly Spindrift.  My choice yielded a monochromatic color scheme.

And the crowning glory!

I did some messing around to eliminate the beginning of round (BOR) jog, and it worked quite well.  This picture shows my BOR:

I am so happy with this hat!!

  2. Curiously, your hat evokes a Viking helmut/faceplate!

Shetland is an amazing place and I would give anything to go back. I love that you make knitting the hat an annual tradition.

Wool Week organizers are fabulous and everything scheduled is memorably brilliant. If anybody is on the fence about attending, I say jump off and GO! You will never regret the trip.
