I have been working on several projects lately that require different balls of yarn.  Example: Weather or Knot Scarf.

I read people’s posts about weaving in ends on this and other projects (like fade cardis and shawls).  Please don’t weave in ends!  Please minimize your ends as you go!  It will look better and save time.  This video discusses how to eliminate ends on shawls and scarves that have no seam for hiding ends.  I splice my cast on tail and I splice when I join a new color.  I used this on my Comfort Fade Cardigan and had very few ends when I was done.  It works well on fades because the color changes are meant to flow from one to the other.

On my weather scarf, you are supposed to slip the first stitch unless you join a new color – then you knit it.  That means that the left edge is always slipped but the right edge isn’t.  I slip every first stitch on both edges.  I splice in the new color after slipping.  I don’t care if there is a candy cane effect on my weather scarf as my colors blend quite well…that is until summer!  My red and gold could be very “candy caney” (yes, I made up that word!!).  If it’s too noticeable I will Russian join those colors.  So far, I am into February and do not have a single end to weave in.

I have used this method on many different yarns, even cotton – both plied and unplied.  Yes, I knit mostly with wool, but this works with superwash wool as well as regular.  I have found very few instances where I could not make this work.  If you can’t make it work, then you are no worse off than you were before!

I just completed a project I have been working on off and on for months – my Comfort Fade Cardigan.  It was not my favorite thing to knit.  I didn’t think it was turning out and it was a LOT of knitting and futzing.  I used Goosey Squish DK in a Comfort Fade kit.  Unfortunately the kit wasn’t packed in the proper proportions so I had way more dark colors than light.  By the time I started it, I had had the kit a while, so I decided to make it work.  It meant a lot of adjusting along the way.  I survived! 😉

The sweater has this HUGE collar and I thought that might be something I would want to change…I didn’t.  The sweater is very low cut so you need the collar to fill in.  it is still pretty low cut on me!  obviously I will be wearing a blouse under it, but sweater is pretty open in the upper front.

In the regular pattern, the collar fades to the lightest color.  That means that the lightest color meets the darkest when folded over.  I like mine better!  I think I will wear this a lot this spring!!

PS to Chloe: I knit a lot.  I am a slow knitter, but I do knit a lot of the time!

I finally jumped on the bandwagon and started my Weather or Knot scarf put together by The Yarnery!  They have kits in LOFT and Holst Coast.  I, of course, went in a different direction and selected a similar colorway of Tukuwool.  It is lightweight like the Coast version, so I added 10 sts in width.  I got the yarn yesterday and am already caught up, so this is a fun project with minimal commitment.  Well, you commit for a year!  But, you could actually knit a few weeks at a time sporadically throughout the year.

You knit 2 rows a day based on the high temperature.  You also compare the day’s high to the average for that date.  Each color represents a different range of temperatures.  I created a spreadsheet with the average high temps for the year and then just fill in the daily high.  Easy peasy!!

January is almost over and my scarf is 6 inches.  Maybe I’ll get another half inch by month’s end.  That gives me a scarf roughly 78 inches long, which isn’t bad!  If it seems short, I can add fringe or tassels.  I am loving every stitch so far…

And can I just give a shout out to my knitting peeps?  You are the most over-the-top generous, supportive, and fantastic group of friends one could ever ask for!!  I love you all to pieces!!

PS to Felicity: I used the same colorway as The Yarnery kits.  Purple is the coldest at anything under 14 degrees F.  I know several people who are adding a color for under zero degrees.  We are going into a really cold snap this week — well under zero — for several days.  I may add something really dark for that temperature!!  I am thinking of a Spindrift color (Dusk).

PS2 to Pam: Great weather cowl!  It is very easy to see the temperature trends just looking at the cowl.

PS3 to Maura: Yes, the pattern tells you how to indicate if the temp is above or below the daily average.  Thus far I have one day that is on average.  The rest are about 50-50 above or below.

PS4 to Jenny: Different climates assign different temperature ranges to the colors!!

Can I first say that Surly’s Ito sweater is stunning???  Do not be a bit surprised to see a giant replica in the future!!

Okay.  Today is my first official day of retirement.  I have had Fridays off for years, so today doesn’t seem that different, and yet it does.  My work life is over…well, except for my part-time “job” at The Yarnery!  I purposely scheduled myself to teach tomorrow so I would feel like I still worked.  Now, with polar temps and husband gone all weekend, I question that decision!!  It means I have to walk the dog, etc., etc.  Usually I don’t mind, but it really is cold!

My first trip will be to see Surly and her new puppy.  I can’t go until March so I hope he is still teeny tiny!!  Other than that it will be life as usual!!  Thanks for all of the well wishes and celebrations!

I just finished my Ito Pullover designed by Veronik Avery.  I fell in love with the design the first time I saw it, but the pattern was no longer available.  Fortunately, it’s now been released digitally.

The original yarn is discontinued, but I substituted a mix of Carol Sunday’s 3-ply yarns (along with a little bit of Classic Elite Fresco in cream that I had in my stash).  I used her Brigadoon in Birch for the main color.  It is lovely to work with and feels wonderful after blocking.  I also used Angelic in Midnight and Aqua, and Eden in Celery.  Susan and I highly recommend all of her yarns, which are available here.  (No, we don’t get kickbacks!)

I made a few modifications to the pattern.  The original is very fitted and sleeveless.  I knit a more A-line shape and added full sleeves.  I also switched out the 2 x 2 ribbing and used garter rib instead.

I’m extremely pleased with how it turned out.  Sometimes, when you’ve wanted to knit something for a long time you end up disappointed.  Not this time!

How many hats does one person need?  Apparently a new one every day!!  I had been awaiting the launch of a new hat pattern, Briocherub.  I really, really liked the look of it.  When she announced the release, I was ON IT!!!

I used some very well aged stash yarn.  This hat is not the easiest and certainly not one that someone new to brioche would want to tackle — but if you like it, go for it!!  I did some changes to the top decreases but other then that followed it pretty closely.  It was very short when done, but blocking got it to the right length for me.

ANNOUNCING A NEW PATTERN RELEASE

I have been cranking out hats like crazy this week in preparation of the launch of my latest hat pattern: Drizzle on the Window.  The “drizzle” refers to the 3 sizes of beads that form what looks like droplets of water running down a window, like this:

This picture was actually taken in my car in a fast food drive-through lane during a recent January thaw!  Here are the hats:

I knit the hats in three different yarns to see how they worked: Sun Valley Fibers MCS, SundayKnits Angelic 3-ply, and Brooklyn Tweed Peerie.  Each took very different yardage though they were the exact same size!  The Angelic and Peerie were easiest when it came to placing the smallest beads.  I have to say that the Angelic is everyone’s hands-down favorite!!

The beadwork is only on the front of the hat, making this a pretty easy and speedy bead project.

PS2 to Alicia: The Angelic needs to be purchased from Carol Sunday at SundayKnits.   She will mail it immediately.   The yarn is wonderful and so is she.   I bought all the beads at Storm Cloud Trading Company on Snelling and Minnehaha in St. Paul.  I know there are on-line sources as well.

Carol Sunday is one of our favorite designers, and I fell in love with her Soutache the moment I saw it.  I bought a kit (with pale pink as the main color) and then let it sit marinate for a loooong time.  I had glanced at the directions and felt intimidated.  I’d never even learned single color brioche.

I kept being drawn back to the pattern and the yarn and finally decided to go for it.  I swatched with the pink, but wasn’t sure I liked it against the charcoal (which is where the gradient started).  I waffled for a while until Susan pushed me to get the Dijon, which I loved.  (I will still use the pink for something else.)

This was a challenge to start, but once I got into it I loved knitting it.  I liked Carol’s charting quite a bit — it seems slightly more intuitive than other brioche charting I’ve looked at.  (Then again, what do I know?  I’m a complete novice!)

This was truly a labor of love.  It’s squishy and beautiful and warm.  I absolutely adore it.  This was my first brioche but it definitely will NOT be my last!

Wait — where did THOSE little cuties come from?  One of them will be coming to our home in early February.  (That’s the breeder’s hand, not mind.  I was only allowed to look not touch as of yet.)  They are two weeks old in that photo.  Little Golden Retrievers!!

That’s what you say to anyone who mentions Snefnug (sneff-noog) yarn!!  I saw the yarn featured on an email blast from The Yarnery and just had to check it out!!  I bought two for me and two for Surly.  I made the Leafing Cowl shown in the email.

It’s about 10 inches by 30.  I added a repeat and reversed the decreases (where they did k2tog, I did ssk and vice versa).  Different sized cowls are made by using bigger yarn.  The yarn is butter soft.

My Fun Nine from 2018!!

Imagine my surprise when I turned on Jeopardy today and saw a knitter!  Not just any knitter, but Kmkat who has been a loyal reader and commenter lo these many years!  I first spied the knitting, of course (the picture below is from yesterday’s show, which I missed due to knitting group 🙁 ).  Kathryn wore a knitted sweater today — Tappan-Zee, to be exact.  Congratulations on your winnings and for show casing knitting on national television!!  It was so fun to see you!

I have been knitting and baking and entertaining, so quite busy like everyone else.  Last week I finished a sweater.  I thought it took forever but it only took about a month — even with time off for boredom!!

It is Ebbetts by Elizabeth Doherty.  It is the sister of Woodfords, a favorite of mine, but knit in worsted weight.  Woodfords was knit in LOFT, Ebbetts in Blackstone Tweed.

The new sweater should be very wearable.  Woodfords is super cute but because the yarn seems more fragile, I don’t wear it a lot.  I am not going to baby Ebbetts!!

I bought the book Holiday and Celebration Bread in Five Minutes a Day: Sweet and Decadent Baking for Every Occasion.  I made the basic white dough and used it for simple dinner rolls Christmas Eve – people liked them a lot.  Today I used up the remaining dough:

I did a simple braid and an egg wash.  It tastes amazing!!  Maybe even deserving of a Paul Hollywood handshake!! 😉
